Registered Nurse – Neuro ICU
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Neuro ICU (32 beds)
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 7pm–7am)
Hours per week: 36 hours
Contract length: 13 weeks (minimum)
Job Overview
- Care for critically ill patients with neurological diagnoses including craniotomies, brain tumor removals, ablations, brain biopsies, complex spine surgeries, and scoliosis repair.
- Work in a Level 1 Trauma, teaching hospital environment with a 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio.
- Float between all ICU floors and telemetry units; tele floor patient load may be 4:1.
- Charge nurse responsibilities included (does not take patients).
- Night shift includes approximately 4 weekend shifts per 4-week period; holiday work based on unit coverage.
- Use Phillips monitors and manage ventilated patients.
- Respiratory therapy and pharmacy services available 24/7.
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience in a large hospital (450+ beds).
- Level 1 Trauma experience required.
- Neuro ICU experience with strong neuro assessment skills and intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring.
- Prior travel experience required: 3–6 months travel experience in Neuro ICU or ED.
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
- Cerner EMR experience required.
- Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam must be passed 24–48 hours prior to position acceptance (maximum 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region).
- Must pass a Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation.
- Must complete SIMs Lab competency for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (pass/fail).
- Must be able to float to Medical-Surgical Telemetry floors.
- Must have own vehicle if part of a travel team.
- No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed.
- Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing.
Orientation & Onboarding
- Weekly orientations held on Mondays (except holiday weeks).
- Onboarding paperwork must be completed by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date; incomplete files will delay start.
- Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts on Neuro ICU.
- SIMs Lab and additional education on lifts, restraints, and wound care required.
Additional Notes
- Facility is a nationally recognized tertiary care center with a strong neurological focus.
- Teaching hospital environment; nursing students may be present.
- Parking assigned with shuttle service; night shift parking in garage.
- Candidates cannot hold concurrent contracts with this employer.
- Must have been off permanent staff at this facility system for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment.
- Scrub color: any non-offensive color or print; steel grey preferred on Neuro floors.
