Job Overview

  • Bed count: Acute 36 beds, Subacute 54 beds, Trauma bays 6 (no travelers assigned here)
  • Shift: Nights
  • Hours per day: 12
  • Hours per week: 36
  • Patient volume: Approximately 250-300 patients per day, 88,000 patients per year
  • Common patient types: Trauma, burns, psych holds (30-40), pediatric patients transferred out, spinal cord injury, trauma brain injury (TBI)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
  • Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per month (unit discretion)
  • Floating: Within ER only, can float between 4 nearby facilities (~30 minutes apart)
  • Orientation: 2-3 shifts floor-specific orientation plus SIMs Lab skills training

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of core ER nursing experience
  • Minimum 6 months Level 1 Trauma experience
  • Previous travel experience required for Emergency Department or Neuro ICU
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS (ENPC does NOT substitute for PALS)
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam: Must pass within 24-48 hours prior to acceptance; maximum 2 attempts allowed; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region
  • Cerner EMR experience required for ED
  • Must have own vehicle (travel teams)
  • Must comply with appearance policy: natural hair color only, no facial piercings, men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Pass/fail exam on Day 1 of orientation (study guide provided)
  • Competency in Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes required (SIMs Lab pass/fail)
  • Must be able to read telemetry strips (Phillips monitors)
  • Must be able to work 12-hour night shifts with 4 weekend shifts per 4 weeks; holiday shifts based on unit coverage

  • Level 1 Trauma center and teaching hospital
  • Trauma bays staffed by core staff only (no travelers)
  • 2 charge nurses with light patient loads
  • 4 patient care technicians (sitters) per shift
  • Respiratory Therapy available 24/7; ventilators managed by RT
  • Pharmacy available 24/7; pharmacist in ER 10 hours/day
  • Hospitalists and intensivists in-house (2 to 8 MDs), midlevels and anesthesia support
  • Float policy includes 4 facilities within 30 minutes of each other
  • No facial piercings and natural hair colors required
  • Parking: Assigned parking with shuttle to facility; night shift uses parking garage

Additional Notes

  • Candidates cannot hold concurrent contracts with other employers
  • Must have been off permanent staff at this health system for 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment
  • Weekly orientations held on Mondays (except holidays)
  • SIMs Lab includes sterile field maintenance, Foley catheter insertion, central line dressing changes, lifts, restraints, and wound care education
  • Psych holds average 30-40 patients
  • Charge nurses and nurse aides support workload
  • Float between main campus, Westgate campus, and 2 freestanding ERs in nearby cities

Contract Details

  • Minimum contract length: 13 weeks
  • Travel radius: 50 miles
  • Orientation and onboarding deadlines strictly enforced (complete by Wednesday 1pm CST before start)

This position is ideal for experienced ER nurses with trauma experience who are comfortable working in a high-volume Level 1 trauma teaching hospital environment, able to pass required clinical exams, and meet strict appearance and competency standards.
