Registered Nurse (Med/Tele/PCU) - Bismarck, North Dakota
Job Overview
- Specialty: Medical/Telemetry/Progressive Care Unit (PCU) RN
- Location: Bismarck, ND
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Days (7a-7p), 12-hour shifts
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: Typically 1:4-5; occasional 5-6 on nights; PCU overflow 1:3
- Unit Size: 32 beds
- Orientation: 2 shifts (12 hours each) of unit-specific orientation during first week
Patient Population & Care
- Patient Types: Adults and geriatrics with cardiac conditions, including cardiac catheterizations, electrophysiology studies, pacemakers, alcohol-related issues, COVID-19 (including BiPAP), general surgical patients with cardiac history, pneumonia, acute on chronic conditions, influenza, and sepsis
- Care Level: Telemetry and cardiac-focused PCU care
- Common Drips: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Heparin, Nitro, Nipride, Lasix, low dose Dopamine (no Levophed)
- RN Responsibilities: Must read and interpret cardiac strips; titrate drips as needed
- Respiratory Equipment: BiPAP, tracheostomies, Airvo; RNs troubleshoot but do not manage ventilators
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse: Present on both shifts; may take a light patient load (2-3 patients)
- Nurse Aides/Patient Care Techs: Present with goal ratio of 1:10
- Telemetry/Monitor Techs: Available at nurse’s station and portable monitors in rooms
Scheduling & Floating
- Shift Rotation: 7a-7p and 7p-7a shifts; rotation no more than once weekly; blocked schedules considered
- Floating: Required to float to PCU, medical-surgical, and some ER hold areas as needed
Required Qualifications
- Certifications: BLS and ACLS required
- Experience: Must have PCU experience and ability to read cardiac strips
- Preferred: Epic electronic health record experience preferred
- Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers are acceptable
- Licensure: Current RN license valid in North Dakota
Additional Information
- Dress Code: Any color scrubs allowed
- Radius Rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with certain affiliated healthcare systems
- Return to Office (RTO): Required within 7 days of contract start; no extensions allowed
