Registered Nurse – Neuro ICU
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Neuro ICU (32 beds)
Contract Length: 13 weeks (minimum)
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 7pm–7am)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Patient Ratio: 1:2
Unit & Facility Highlights
- Level 1 Trauma center with a large hospital (450+ beds)
- Teaching hospital with nursing students
- Neuro ICU patients include those with craniotomies, brain tumor removals, ablations, brain biopsies, complicated spine surgeries, and scoliosis repair
- Phillips monitors and ventilators in use
- Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy available 24/7
- Floating assignments possible to ICU, Medical-Surgical, Telemetry (1:4 ratio), and other nearby campuses
- Neuro floors wear steel grey scrubs (any non-offensive color/print allowed)
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse license
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience in a large hospital (450+ beds)
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- Strong neuro assessment skills and experience with ICP (intracranial pressure) monitoring
- Experience with EVD (external ventricular drain) required
- Cerner EMR experience required
- ACLS and BLS certifications required
- Prior travel experience required: 3–6 months travel experience in Neuro ICU or ED
- Must pass Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam within 24–48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region)
- Must pass a Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation
- SIMs Lab competency required for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (pass/fail; sterile field maintenance critical)
- Must have own vehicle for travel assignments
- Must comply with appearance policies: no facial piercings, natural hair colors only, men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
Orientation & Onboarding
- 2 shifts of floor-specific orientation required
- Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
- Onboarding paperwork must be completed by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date; incomplete files will delay start
- Day 1 pass/fail exam with study guide provided
Work Schedule & Expectations
- 12-hour night shifts, typically 36 hours per week
- 4 weekend shifts per 4-week period
- Holidays worked based on unit coverage and core staff rotation
- Charge nurse role available (does not take patients)
- May be placed on standby for scheduled shifts
Additional Notes
- Candidates with 18 months Neuro ICU experience may be considered if under 2 years total ICU experience
- 50-mile radius rule applies for travel assignments (driver’s license is source of truth)
- No concurrent contracts allowed while working this assignment
- Must have been off permanent staff at this health system for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
- Parking assigned with shuttle service; night shift parking in garage
- Facility is a nationally recognized tertiary care and research center with a world-renowned neurological institute
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU nurses with strong critical care skills, trauma experience, and prior travel assignments who are comfortable working nights in a high-acuity teaching hospital environment.
