Registered Nurse (RN) – Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Neuro Acute 6NNA/B
Beds: 48 total (including 10 epilepsy specialty rooms)
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
Contract Length: 13 weeks minimum


Job Description

  • Provide nursing care on a Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring unit specializing in epilepsy, brain tumors, subdural hematoma, scoliosis surgeries, traumatic brain injury, and other neurological diagnoses.
  • Patient ratios are approximately 1:4 for both day and night shifts.
  • Charge Nurse role available (no patient assignment).
  • Support staff includes 1-2 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) on days and 1 at night, plus resource RNs.
  • Floating may be required to MedSurg/Telemetry units or other campuses.
  • Unit is a teaching hospital; nurses may have nursing students assigned.
  • Orientation includes 2 floor-specific shifts.
  • Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab required, covering Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (varies by unit).
  • Must maintain sterile technique during procedures.
  • Additional education on lifts, restraints, and wound care provided.
  • Work holiday shifts based on unit coverage; weekend requirement is 3 shifts per 4 weeks with self-scheduling.
  • Scrub color: Grey’s Anatomy / steel.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Arizona.
  • Minimum 2 years of core nursing experience in specialty (Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring or related critical care/telemetry).
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required.
  • Prior travel experience required for Emergency Department or Neuro ICU.
  • ACLS and BLS (AHA) certifications required.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Certification in Med Surg/Telemetry preferred.
  • Experience with Cerner EMR required.
  • Must pass Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts).
  • Must pass Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab.
  • Strong critical thinking and assessment skills, including ability to detect subtle patient changes and assess cranial nerves.
  • Must have own vehicle if part of a travel team.
  • Must comply with facility appearance policies: no facial piercings, natural hair colors only, men must be clean-shaven for fit testing.

Facility & Unit Highlights

  • Level 1 Trauma center and teaching hospital.
  • Neuro unit includes 10 epilepsy specialty rooms.
  • Telemetry and MedSurg patient population with some telemetry monitoring required.
  • Respiratory Therapy (RT) available 24/7; manages BiPAP and ventilators.
  • IV team (SWAT RN) available for difficult IV access.
  • Pharmacy available 24/7.
  • Hospitalist or Intensivist present during day shifts.
  • Use of self-releasing Velcro seat belts (not restraints).

Additional Notes

  • Candidates cannot hold concurrent contracts while working here.
  • Must have been off permanent staff at this health system for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment.
  • Onboarding paperwork must be completed by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date; incomplete files will delay start.
  • Parking assigned with shuttle service to facility; night shift parking in garage.
  • Facility enforces strict policies on appearance and professional conduct.
  • Dysrhythmia exam failure results in 6-month disqualification from assignments in this region.
  • Weekend and holiday coverage required as part of scheduling.

This position is ideal for experienced Neuro Acute or MedSurg/Telemetry RNs with strong assessment skills and prior travel experience who are comfortable working in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment.
