Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – Visual Monitor Unit (VMU)

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Visual Monitor Unit (VMU) – MedSurg/Telemetry with behavioral health component
Unit Size: 14 beds
Shift: Nights (7pm–7am)
Hours per Week: 36 hours (12-hour shifts)
Contract Length: 13 weeks (minimum)


Unit & Patient Population

  • MedSurg/Telemetry unit specializing in patients with secondary psychiatric diagnoses (mental illness, confusion, dementia, low cognitive ability)
  • Behavioral health techs and security monitor patients via video
  • Psych MD present on unit
  • Rare use of physical restraints; chemical restraints used as needed
  • Average patient length of stay: 4 days
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
  • Charge nurse has patient assignments
  • Floating may include ED psych holds and MedSurg floors

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Arizona
  • Minimum 2 years of core MedSurg/Telemetry nursing experience
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required
  • Cerner EMR experience required
  • ACLS and BLS certifications required
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region)
  • Must pass Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (Foley catheter insertion, central line dressing changes, lifts, restraints, wound care)
  • Natural hair color only; no facial piercings
  • Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Prior travel experience required for ED and Neuro ICU roles (not explicitly required for VMU)
  • Travel teams must have their own vehicles

Orientation & Onboarding

  • Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts
  • Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays)
  • Onboarding paperwork must be completed by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date; incomplete files delay start
  • Day 1 includes pass/fail SIMs Lab skills assessment

Work Schedule & Requirements

  • Night shifts only, 12 hours (7pm–7am)
  • Weekend requirement: every 3rd weekend (approximately 4 weekend shifts per 4 weeks)
  • Holidays covered by permanent staff rotation
  • No concurrent contracts allowed while working this assignment
  • Must be off permanent staff assignment in the system for 12 months before eligibility for travel assignment

Additional Notes

  • VMU is a telemetry unit with a behavioral health component, not a psychiatric unit
  • Candidates should have strong MedSurg/Telemetry skills and a willingness to work with mentally ill patients; psychiatric experience preferred but not required
  • Parking assigned with shuttle service; night shift parking in garage
  • Facility is a teaching hospital; nursing students may be present
  • Scrub color: Navy; panic buttons available on unit
  • Respiratory therapy and pharmacy services available 24/7
  • IV team (SWAT RN) available on unit

This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg/Telemetry RNs who meet trauma and certification requirements and are comfortable working with patients who have behavioral health needs in a monitored inpatient setting.
