ICU Registered Nurse Travel Assignment - California

Job Overview

  • Location: Redding, California
  • Unit: ICU / Trauma ICU (30 beds)
  • Shift: Nights
  • Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
  • Schedule: Every other weekend required; holiday requirements addressed as needed
  • Floating: May float to PCU, CICU, telemetry, or med-surg units (CICU patients will be ICU-level, not open heart)
  • Orientation: 1 day on unit, additional days if needed
  • Work Environment: Fast-paced ICU with trauma, neuro-stroke, head injury patients, ventriculostomies, ICP monitoring, and post-TPA care
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Typically 1:2, sometimes 1:1

Required Qualifications

  • Active California RN license
  • Minimum 2-3 years ICU specialty experience (higher end of range preferred)
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
  • PALS certification preferred; required if assignment extends beyond 6 months
  • Experience with ICP monitoring and ventriculostomies or post-TPA patients is mandatory
  • Ability to titrate drips including vasopressors and sedation
  • Prior travel experience preferred; candidates with only 2 years experience and minimal travel experience must have strong backgrounds in large, fast-paced facilities
  • COVID-19 vaccination required

Unit Details

  • Charge Nurse available 24/7, does not take patient assignments
  • House Supervisor available 24/7
  • Respiratory Therapist assigned to ICU 24/7 with Hamilton ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP
  • Telemetry/Monitor Techs present; RNs interpret their own cardiac strips (monitors are GE brand)
  • 1 Unit Tech supports all 30 beds, primarily performing secretarial duties
  • Dress Code: Navy scrubs

Additional Notes

  • Must be prepared for a demanding workload and fast pace
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills essential
  • Robust interventional radiology program on site
  • Self-scheduling is tentative and subject to manager approval; schedules posted about 6 weeks in advance
  • Travelers are prioritized first for schedule changes or float assignments
  • No call or standby requirements for travelers
