Facility: Indian Health Service (IHS) – Lawton Service Unit
Locations:
Lawton Indian Hospital, Lawton, OK
Anadarko Indian Health Center, Anadarko, OK
Carnegie Indian Health Center, Carnegie, OK
Employment Type: Contract (1 Base Year + 4 Option Years)
Shift: Full-Time, 8-hour shifts (Monday–Friday; occasional weekends depending on site)
No Federal Holidays
Position Summary
The Indian Health Service (IHS) is seeking a qualified Diabetes Pharmacist (Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist preferred) to provide comprehensive clinical pharmacy services within the Lawton Service Unit. The pharmacist will deliver direct patient care with a strong focus on diabetes management, chronic disease optimization, and medication therapy management in collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
The role supports American Indian and Alaska Native populations through evidence-based, culturally competent pharmaceutical care in outpatient and ambulatory clinic settings.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Pharmacy Services
Provide comprehensive ambulatory care pharmacy services to adult, pediatric, and geriatric patients
Manage diabetes patients under a collaborative practice agreement (CPA)
Utilize American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards of Care for treatment decisions
Adjust medications based on clinical guidelines, labs, and patient outcomes
Interpret and act on continuous glucose monitor (CGM) data
Patient Care & Counseling
Process and verify prescription orders from healthcare providers
Dispense medications and provide detailed patient counseling on:
Medication use and adherence
Side effects and drug interactions
Expected outcomes and monitoring
Ensure patient understanding of therapy plans and chronic disease management
Electronic Health Records & Documentation
Document all clinical encounters in IHS Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems
Utilize RPMS, CPRS, Health Summary, Vitals, and TIU modules
Complete timely and accurate charting, progress notes, and order entries
Ensure compliance with medical record completion requirements
Pharmacy Operations Support
Process prescription refills, medication orders, and call-in prescriptions
Manage pharmacy inventory, including controlled substance tracking
Maintain automation systems (cassette refills, labeling, dispensing systems)
Support pharmacy call lines, prescription authorizations, and workflow efficiency
Quality, Compliance & Safety
Maintain compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) standards
Follow HIPAA regulations and federal healthcare privacy laws
Participate in infection control, safety programs, and audits
Maintain clean, safe, and compliant pharmacy environment
Collaboration & Communication
Coordinate care with physicians, nurses, and specialty providers
Work with internal medicine, pediatrics, family practice, and specialty teams
Communicate patient care concerns to the Chief Pharmacist or leadership
Professional Standards
Maintain active, unrestricted pharmacist licensure
Participate in required training, in-services, and continuing education
Follow IHS policies, procedures, and clinical protocols
Uphold ethical and culturally sensitive patient care practices
Minimum Qualifications
Graduate of an accredited College of Pharmacy
Active, unrestricted U.S. pharmacist license (any U.S. state/territory)
Board Certification required or preferred:
BCACP (Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist), OR
BCPS (Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist), OR
Completion of PGY1 residency
Experience in diabetes management in ambulatory or collaborative care settings
Strong knowledge of evidence-based clinical guidelines (especially ADA Standards)
U.S. Citizenship required
Ability to communicate effectively in English (written and verbal)
