Position Overview
NuWest Travel Nursing is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for a Corrections / Medication Assisted Treatment travel assignment. This is a 5 × 8-hour Day Shift position supporting a correctional facility's MAT program. The ideal candidate is a confident, self-directed clinician who is comfortable working in a secure environment and passionate about providing high-quality, nonjudgmental care to patients in addiction recovery.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and monitor medications used in MAT programs, including buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone, in accordance with facility protocols and provider orders
- Perform nursing assessments and monitor patients for treatment response, side effects, and signs of withdrawal or diversion
- Conduct intake assessments, vital signs, and health screenings for newly admitted patients
- Collaborate with providers, counselors, and case managers to support individualized treatment plans
- Provide patient education on MAT medications, addiction recovery, and overall health management
- Document all clinical encounters accurately and in a timely manner within the facility's health record system
- Administer scheduled and PRN medications and monitor for adverse reactions
- Respond to medical emergencies within the correctional setting following established protocols
- Maintain compliance with all facility security policies, procedures, and regulations
- Communicate effectively with correctional staff, healthcare team members, and patients
- Uphold strict confidentiality of patient health information in accordance with HIPAA and facility policy
- Complete required orientation, competencies, and mandatory training
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Active, unencumbered RN license in the state of assignment (compact license welcomed)
- Minimum 1–2 years of RN experience; corrections, behavioral health, or MAT experience strongly preferred
- Current BLS certification
- Ability to pass a correctional facility background check and security clearance process
- Ability to work within a secure, structured environment and follow all facility security protocols
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and provide nonjudgmental, patient-centered care
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a correctional healthcare setting
- Experience administering and monitoring MAT medications
- Familiarity with substance use disorder treatment and recovery support
- Experience in behavioral health, detox, or addiction medicine settings
- Strong de-escalation and communication skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
