Position Overview

NuWest Travel Nursing is seeking an experienced Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse for an 8-week travel assignment. This is a 3 × 12-hour Day Shift position supporting a busy L&D unit. The ideal candidate is a confident, skilled clinician with strong obstetric nursing experience who is comfortable managing the full spectrum of labor, delivery, and immediate postpartum care and can hit the ground running in a new clinical environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive antepartum, intrapartum, and immediate postpartum nursing assessments and ongoing fetal and maternal monitoring
  • Manage and support patients through all stages of labor including spontaneous, induced, and augmented labor
  • Initiate and manage oxytocin and other labor-related IV drips per provider orders and facility protocols
  • Recognize and respond promptly to obstetric emergencies including fetal distress, shoulder dystocia, placental abruption, hemorrhage, and eclampsia
  • Assist with vaginal and cesarean deliveries and provide skilled circulating or scrub support in the OR as required
  • Provide immediate newborn assessment and stabilization at delivery; initiate neonatal resuscitation as needed
  • Collaborate with obstetricians, midwives, neonatologists, anesthesia, and the interdisciplinary care team to ensure safe maternal and neonatal outcomes
  • Administer epidural medications under anesthesia direction and monitor for therapeutic response and adverse effects
  • Educate patients and families on the labor process, pain management options, breastfeeding, and newborn care
  • Support patients and families through high-risk, complicated, or loss-related obstetric situations with compassion and professionalism
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record per facility and regulatory standards
  • Uphold all patient safety, infection control, HIPAA, and Joint Commission standards
  • Complete required orientation, competencies, and mandatory training
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Active, unencumbered RN license in the state of assignment (compact license welcomed)
  • Minimum 1–2 years of recent Labor & Delivery RN experience in an acute care setting
  • Current BLS certification
  • Current ACLS certification — required
  • Current PALS certification — required
  • Current NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification — required
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) or Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification — required
  • LA City Fire and Life Safety card — required
  • Strong fetal monitoring and obstetric assessment skills
  • Ability to work independently and adapt quickly to new environments and workflows

Preferred Qualifications

  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification or Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB) certification
  • Experience with high-risk obstetric patients including preeclampsia, preterm labor, and multiple gestation
  • Experience circulating or assisting in cesarean delivery
  • Familiarity with labor support techniques and patient-centered birthing care
  • Proficiency with electronic health record systems; Epic experience a plus
  • Strong communication skills and collaborative, team-oriented approach
