Travel Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse for a medical surgical unit with a 12-hour night shift schedule. The assignment accepts contracts from 13 to 26 weeks. Candidates must be comfortable with patient ratios of 1:6-7 and floating to similar units or alternate care locations as needed. Weekend work is every other weekend.

Contract staff may be required to participate in emergency response teams during catastrophic events or disasters.


Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 2 years of medical-surgical nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Orthopedic trauma experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Experience managing:
    • Heparin drips
    • Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA)
    • Colostomy care
    • Feeding tube care and management
    • Blood product administration
    • Central and peripheral line care/management
    • Phlebotomy and IV starts
    • PICC line management
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Interpretation of dysrhythmias
  • Pre/Post hemodialysis management
  • Management of drips
  • Care for CVA, pre/post neurosurgery, spinal cord injuries

Shift Details

  • 12-hour night shifts
  • 36 or 48 hours per week accepted
  • Floating to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatient holding
  • Assigned every other weekend

Patient Population / Diagnoses

  • Severe injuries to bones, joints, and soft tissue
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spine injuries and neurological trauma/nerve damage
  • Subdural hematoma

Orientation & Training

  • 12-hour unit orientation
  • 16-hour organizational education
  • Navy scrubs required

Systems Used

  • Pyxis medication system
  • Epic electronic health record
  • SBAR communication tool

Additional Requirements

  • Must complete various background checks and verifications (education, licensure, etc.) as per travel healthcare standards
  • Required health documents include up-to-date immunizations and screenings (e.g., TB test, flu vaccination or exemption)
  • Drug screening within 6 months of start date
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation and compliance training modules
  • Photo ID for badge creation required prior to start
  • Participation in medication safety training and other mandatory education
  • Must comply with facility policies including confidentiality and tobacco-free campus acknowledgment

Important Notes

  • No return to origin (RTO) after booking is allowed except under strict conditions; excessive call-offs may lead to cancellation
  • Candidates must be comfortable with the patient ratios and floating requirements
  • Contract staff may be required to work during storms, hurricanes, or other disaster events

This position is ideal for RNs with solid medical-surgical experience who are comfortable working nights and managing complex patient care in a fast-paced environment. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
