Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Position Details

• Specialty: Registered Nurse (Ambulatory OR)
• Shift: 10-hour shifts, 4 days per week (6:30 AM – 5:00 PM)
• Scheduled day off based on department needs; occasional late shifts a few times per month
• No on-call required
• Possibility of floating within Perioperative facility
• Block scheduling available at manager’s discretion
• Guaranteed hours with potential to be called off up to 10 hours per 2-week period (equivalent to 1 shift)

Patient Population & Unit Description

• Unit includes Preop/PACU with 10 RNs and 1 PCT, 20 bays for pre/post patients, 2 ORs, 2 GI procedural rooms, and 1 VIR procedural room
• Responsibilities include prepping patients for surgery (history review, medication reconciliation, vitals, EKGs, IV starts, FSBS, medication administration) and post-anesthesia care (monitoring vitals, discharge instructions, patient discharge)
• Patient cases include Orthopedics (total joints, arthroscopy, hand, shoulder, elbow), Interventional Radiology (VIR), and GI scopes (upper and lower)
• Unit does not handle general surgery, Labor & Delivery, or pediatrics

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in South Carolina
• Minimum 1 year of Operating Room (OR) experience within the last year
• One completed travel assignment
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• Experience in one or more of the following specialties: Ophthalmology, ENT Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Plastic Surgery, Orthopedics, Endocrinology

Certifications & Compliance

• BLS (AHA only) required for all clinical candidates
• ACLS required for PreOp, PACU, and other specified adult critical care units (confirm with manager)
• Other certifications (PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM, NIH Stroke, etc.) as applicable per unit requirements
• State license primary source verification required; SC RN license processing time 3-5 weeks (walk-through/temp license option available for eligible candidates)
• Nursys verification required for all RNs
• Radiation badge ordering process must be initiated prior to start; candidates cannot begin floor work without badge
• Fit test for N95 mask (O&M Halyard FLUIDSHIELD or 3M Aura 1870+) required within 90 days of start and renewed annually
• Drug screening (10-panel urine) required within 90 days of start
• Annual background check including multiple searches and verifications required
• Proof of 2 clinical references required
• Employment history verification of last 3 clinical employers required

Health & Immunization Requirements

• Physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands, updated annually
• Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
• Annual TB questionnaire completion required
• Immunizations or positive titers required for:

  • Measles (Rubeola)
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Varicella
  • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within 10 years or declination form
• Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug 1 – Mar 31)
• COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; if declined, must complete vaccination declination form

Orientation & Facility Specifics

• Completion of orientation modules and facility-specific training required prior to start
• Modules typically take 2 hours and must be completed on a computer (not mobile device)
• Clear, passport-style photo required for badge issuance
• Upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into facility system prior to start
• Radiation exposure attestation form required before start if radiation badge is needed

Additional Notes

• Candidates must include all requested time off (RTO) at submission; approval based on facility needs
• Multiple RTO requests during the 8-13 week contract likely to be denied
• Candidates may be sent home if orientation modules are incomplete upon arrival
• Facility may cancel candidates refusing to comply with fit testing or radiation badge requirements
