Description

Registered Nurse – Neuro PCU (Travel/Contract)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • Charting System: EPIC experience required
  • Weekend Requirement: Either every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract
  • Floating: Required to float to units within clinical skillset
  • Patient Population: Adult neurological patients, including neurosurgical recovery, stroke management, neuro-specific diagnoses, and medical overflow
  • Unit Features: Includes 5 beds for continuous 24-hour epilepsy monitoring
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4–5 (travelers must be comfortable with up to 1:5)
  • First-Time Travelers: Accepted
  • Local Candidates: Accepted within a specified radius (based on driver’s license/state ID address)
  • Call-Off Policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (American Heart Association only)
  • BLS (American Heart Association only)
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring and emergency response (dysrhythmia interpretation/management, Rapid Response/Code teams)
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
  • Medication administration, including cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support (nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management)
  • Rapid Response and isolation precautions

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, specifically Neuro PCU experience within the last year
  • Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in Rapid Response teams

Required Documentation and Compliance

  • Valid Driver’s License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility required within 48 hours of signing
  • Background check covering 7 years of residence/employment history, completed within 1 year of start
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Education verification of highest earned degree required (transcript or diploma acceptable)
  • NURSYS verification for RN license within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Fit test for respirator masks within 1 year, updated annually (onsite fit testing possible if needed)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Immunization or positive titer documentation for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (vaccination series, positive titer, or declination)
    • Varicella
  • Flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form (masking required if declined)
  • Two clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted)
  • Completed employment application/resume
  • Annual skills checklist update required
  • Photo for badge (professional, plain background, no selfies or filters)
  • Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start

Additional Notes

  • Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)
  • Must work one holiday per contract
  • Facility allows blocked scheduling requests if submitted with application

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized neurological progressive care unit with a focus on adult neuro patients, including stroke and neurosurgical recovery, in a Level I Trauma Center environment.
