Description

Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, total 36 hours/week)


Job Description

  • Provide clinical care in Labor and Delivery with expected cross-training to Mother/Baby unit.
  • May be floated to NICU (feeders/grower patients).
  • Work includes care for low-risk patients including certified nurse midwife population and high-risk maternal fetal medicine cases.
  • Facility features: approximately 2000 annual deliveries, 8 private labor rooms, 4 private triage beds, and 2 OB operating rooms.
  • Time off: Can approve up to 40 hours; work schedule includes every other holiday and every other weekend.

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Fetal Monitoring (Electronic Fetal Monitoring)
  • AWHONN Intermediate level certification

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 1 year of Labor and Delivery experience within the last year
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NRP certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Background Checks and Verifications

  • 7-year criminal background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, updated annually
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated every 30 days
  • Education verification through a third-party vendor; BSN preferred, ASN required if no BSN
  • Official transcript required (photocopy of diploma not accepted)
  • Abuse registry search required only if assigned to Behavioral Health or specific units (not typical for this role)
  • Fingerprinting may be required depending on unit; facility will notify if needed

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months prior to start, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (Tdap after age 11, no exemptions allowed)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol (2-step PPD or Qgold acceptable; Tspot not accepted)
  • Annual TB questionnaire if past positive TB test
  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required; no declinations/exemptions for Rubeola
  • Hepatitis B: Positive Hep B Surface Antibody titer required; if low/negative, additional antigen titer required
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or titer required; declination accepted but must be documented
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required annually during flu season (no exemptions or declinations accepted)
  • Drug screening: 10-panel including marijuana and fentanyl, within 2 months of start and updated annually

Additional Requirements and Information

  • Must carry government-issued photo ID during hours of service
  • Pass/fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions and Mother-Baby unit
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required
  • Skills checklist and competency exams required and must be updated annually
  • Professional appearance guidelines must be reviewed and acknowledged
  • Fit testing required for patient-facing clinical roles, completed onsite if needed
  • Candidate must complete facility-specific screening, release authorization, and traveler compliance forms prior to start

Work Environment and Expectations

  • Night shift with 12-hour shifts, 3 shifts per week
  • Cross-training and floating to related units expected
  • Work schedule includes alternating holidays and weekends
  • Opportunity to work in a high-volume, well-equipped labor and delivery setting with both low and high-risk patient populations
