Sterile Processing Technician Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of recent experience as a Sterile Processing Technician in an acute hospital operating room
- Certification required: CBSPD or IAHCSMM/HSPA (Certified Sterile Processing Technician)
- Experience with hospital charting systems (Cerner preferred)
- Expertise in decontamination, disinfection (chemical agents, disinfectants, HLS, manual cleaning, ultrasonic cleaner, washers/sterilizers)
- Strong aseptic technique, case cart preparation, tray organization, instrument placement, preference cards, labeling, wrapping materials, and sterilization wrapping procedures
- Proficiency in processing endoscopes, scope/probe reprocessing, sets/trays assembly, equipment documentation, and Sterile Processing Microsystem (SPM)
- Ability to process specialty equipment (bariatric, cardiac, dental, ENT, endo, general, laparoscopic, neuro, OBGYN, ophthalmology, ortho, plastics, podiatry, robotics, transplant, urology, vascular)
- Knowledge of biological and chemical indicators, steam sterilization, Steris and Sterrad testing/monitoring
- Flu vaccine required (no exemptions)
- Valid Maryland or compact state healthcare license
- Two supervisor references required
Sterile Processing Technician Responsibilities
- Perform thorough decontamination and disinfection of surgical instruments and equipment using approved procedures and agents
- Prepare and assemble instrument trays, ensuring proper labeling and selection of wrapping materials
- Operate and monitor sterilization equipment, including steam, Steris, and Sterrad systems
- Process and reprocess specialty surgical equipment for multiple clinical disciplines
- Maintain accurate documentation of equipment processing and sterilization cycles
- Collaborate with surgical and nursing teams to ensure timely and safe delivery of sterile supplies
- Adhere to hospital infection control policies and aseptic techniques at all times
- Participate in orientation and required training modules prior to and during assignment
