Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS, ASCP) – Blood Bank contract in Philadelphia, PA (19104). Seeking an experienced MLS with ?1 year transfusion/blood bank experience for a 13-week hospital laboratory role on 2nd/3rd shifts (free parking on those shifts). - Weekly Estimated Pay: $2,600 – $2,790
- Location: Philadelphia, PA 19104 (Philadelphia healthcare / Pennsylvania lab jobs)
- Setting: Hospital Laboratory – Blood Bank / Transfusion Services
- Contract Duration: 13 weeks
- Hours per Week: 40
- Shifts: 2nd (3pm–11pm) & 3rd (11pm–7am); free parking for these shifts
- Schedule: Every other weekend required
- On-Site Position: Must be available to work on-site in the hospital laboratory
Job Requirements
- MLS, ASCP certification required (Medical Laboratory Scientist / Clinical Laboratory Scientist)
- Minimum 1 year of dedicated blood bank / transfusion services experience (not generalist)
- Experience with infusion services, laboratory instrumentation, and trauma transfusion workflows required
- Strong understanding of blood bank labeling criteria, compatibility testing, and transfusion protocols
- Ability to work 2nd and 3rd shifts, including every other weekend
- Excellent communication skills to coordinate with nursing and clinical teams during critical events
Responsibilities
- Perform blood bank testing and process blood products according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Interpret compatibility and serologic test results; resolve unexpected or discrepant findings
- Conduct antibody identification and advanced immunohematology using reference reagents and special techniques
- Document, investigate, and escalate suspected transfusion reactions in accordance with transfusion medicine policies
- Inspect patient samples, verify labeling criteria, and ensure specimen integrity for transfusion
- Select, modify, and issue blood products to meet urgent patient needs in trauma and critical care situations
- Maintain blood product inventory and coordinate crossmatch and emergency release procedures
- Perform equipment and reagent quality control (QC) and troubleshoot QC failures; follow quality systems
- Train and mentor new employees and MLS students; support ongoing competency assessments
- Communicate effectively with Blood Bank leadership and patient care teams during critical transfusion events
- Support overall laboratory operations and timely reporting of deviations; other duties as assigned
