Unit Information
- Beds: 61 surge capacity
- Average Census: 61 patients/day
- Experience Required: Minimum 2 years of ED RN experience
- First-Time Travelers: Accepted
Patient Population / Common Diagnoses
- Chest pain
- Stroke
- Diabetes complications
- Abdominal pain
- Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs)
- Hypertension (HTN)
- Trauma (including stabbings)
- Behavioral/mental health emergencies
Staffing & Ratios
- RN Ratio: 1:4 (varies by zone)
- LPN Ratio: 1:4 (if applicable)
- Support Staff: 4–6 ED techs per shift
Required Certifications & Licensure
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – Required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – Required
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – Required
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – Required
- BCR (Basic Cardiac Rhythm/EKG competency) – Required
- Emergency Nursing Certification – Preferred
Required Skills
- Experience in Level I Trauma ED
- Strong emergency/critical care nursing skills
- Experience with IV drips, including:
- Heparin, Insulin, Cardene
- Dopamine, Epinephrine
- Fentanyl, Propofol, Levophed
Department Support
- CNAs/Techs: Assist with vital signs, glucose checks, ADLs, transport, and patient care
- Unit Secretary: Available
- Charge Nurse: Present each shift
- Phlebotomy: Dedicated team nurse draws
- PICC Team: Available (no IV team)
- Respiratory Therapy: 24/7
- Hospitalist & Intensivist: 24/7
- Telemetry Monitoring: Centralized monitoring in ED
Technology & Equipment
- EMR: Epic
- IV Pumps: Alaris
- Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
- Monitors: Philips
- Additional Equipment Includes:
- VS3 vital sign monitors, Dynamap portable monitors
- Cardiac telemetry monitoring
- Glucommander & Nova glucose systems
- PCA pumps, bladder scanners
- Portable oxygen systems, suction machines
- Rapid infusers (Belmont), Ranger, Bair Hugger
Floating
- Within Emergency Department only
Orientation
- 1 day general orientation (includes modules)
- 2 days unit/department orientation
Scheduling
- Shift Length: 12 hours (7:00 AM–7:00 PM or 7:00 PM–7:00 AM)
- Weekend Requirement: 5–6 shifts per 6-week schedule
- On-Call: Not required
- Holiday Requirement:
- One shift for each holiday group:
- Thanksgiving (Day or after)
- Christmas Eve or Christmas Day
- New Year's Eve or New Year's Day
- One shift for each holiday group:
- Schedule Cycle: 6 weeks
- RTO: Subject to manager approval
