This Occupational Therapist position is based in a well-established acute care hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia, a historic coastal city in the Hampton Roads region. As an Occupational Therapist, you will join a collaborative therapy team working closely with nursing, physicians, case management, and other rehabilitation disciplines. Typical responsibilities include comprehensive OT evaluations, development and implementation of individualized treatment plans, ADL and functional mobility training, cognitive and safety assessments, and education for patients and families to support safe transitions of care. You will be involved in recommending and training patients in the use of adaptive equipment, collaborating with the team on discharge planning, and documenting care thoroughly in the electronic medical record. A typical day includes receiving your caseload during morning huddles, prioritizing new evaluations and high-acuity patients, coordinating with nursing staff for optimal treatment timing, and providing focused, patient-centered interventions throughout the day. You can expect to manage a caseload that reflects a balance of evaluations and follow-up treatments, with patient ratios aligned to support quality, individualized care in a hospital environment. You will engage with a variety of diagnoses, from orthopedic and neurological conditions to complex medical cases, allowing you to refine and expand your clinical expertise. This is a day-shift position structured as five 8-hour shifts per week, offering a predictable schedule that supports work-life balance. While primary hours are during the day, there may be occasional weekend or holiday rotations to support continuity of care across the therapy department. The hospital’s rehabilitation spaces are equipped with modern therapy tools and equipment, and the broader campus includes access to imaging, specialty consults, and other services that support comprehensive, coordinated care.
