Description
General Information
Our emergency department serves a high volume of approximately 150-180 patients daily and comprises 33 main beds, 8 trauma/resuscitation beds, and a dedicated behavioral health pod. We utilize vertical care areas as needed to optimize patient flow and enhance care delivery.
Minimum Experience Requirements
- RN: Minimum of 2 years of emergency department (ED) experience preferred (excluding travel experience). Candidates with 1.5 years of ED experience and 2 years in another acute setting may be considered with management approval.
- LPN: Minimum of 2 years in any acute care setting (medical, behavioral health, or progressive care). Candidates with 1.5 years of ED experience may also be considered with management approval.
Patient Types
Our ED handles a diverse range of patient ages and conditions, including neonates and geriatric patients. We frequently treat:
- Minor to critical conditions such as sepsis, DKA, respiratory illnesses, GI bleeds, and trauma.
- A heavy trauma population, especially during summer months, including stab wounds, gunshot wounds, motor vehicle collisions, drownings, and falls.
- Stroke patients, with the capacity to provide care for up to 24 hours.
Responsibilities
All nursing staff are expected to:
- Care for a wide range of patients, utilizing critical thinking and effective communication skills.
- Perform triage assessments and prioritize patient care needs using the ESI triage system.
- Engage in evidence collection for sexual assault cases as needed, with support resources available.
- Assist with behavioral health patients and provide support across the unit.
Patient Ratios
- RN: 1:4-5
- LPN: 1:4-5
- ED Tech: 1:10
Required Certifications
- For RN: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC, PALS (CPI or MAB/MOAB preferred)
- For LPN: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, PALS (CPI or MAB/MOAB preferred)
Required Education
Completion of a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing. Registered nurses must be licensed in the applicable state.
Support on the Unit
The emergency department features:
- ED Technicians available at a ratio of 1:10.
- 24/7 physician coverage.
- Nursing support, including hospitalists and NP coverage, available around the clock.
- Phlebotomy and radiology services available 24/7.
Charting System
Experience with EPIC charting software is preferred.
Floating Opportunities
Staff may have opportunities to float to inpatient medical/surgical, progressive care, or intensive care areas as needed to support patient care.
Orientation and Scheduling
New staff will undergo:
- 8 hours of facility orientation and 4 hours of ED-specific education.
- A minimum of two 12-hour shifts will be scheduled upon completion of training.
Staff may work variable shifts, and holiday coverage may be required.
Additional Information
Travelers are encouraged to be flexible and may be expected to precept nursing students. Scrub color for staff is navy blue, and free parking is available for all employees.
