Description
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) with experience in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) to join our team. This position involves providing exceptional nursing care to patients with diverse medical needs, including cardiac and vascular conditions.
General Information
- Beds: 44
- Minimum Experience: 1.5 years of general nursing experience and 1 year in PCU
- First-Time Traveler: Accepted with 2+ years of experience
- Distance Requirements: Travelers must live 100 miles away from any facility
- Permanent Staff: Must wait 1 full year to return as a traveler
Patient Types
This is a mixed acuity unit that includes:
- Intermediate Care acuity
- Telemetry and MedSurg patients
- Direct admits, ED admits, and post-cath lab patients
- Conditions treated include MI, NSTEMI, STEMI, CHF, and dysrhythmia management
Responsibilities
- Provide care for post-cardiac/vascular, post-cardiac cath patients, and those who have undergone open heart surgery.
- Manage patients requiring titratable cardiac and vasoactive medications.
- Conduct cardiac rhythm interpretation and manage chest tubes.
- Administer TNK and other relevant medications as prescribed.
Patient Ratios
- RN to patient ratio of 1:4, can be adjusted to 1:3 based on acuity
Required Certifications
- BLS
- ACLS
- NIHSS
Required Education
Completion of a nursing education program approved by the board of nursing; must possess an active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
Skills Required
- Experience with cardiac procedural recovery (CABG, TAVR, post-cardiac cath)
- Knowledge of MI pharmacology and titratable medications
- Ability to interpret cardiac rhythms
- Chest tube management
- Experience with heparin infusions and related treatments
Unit Support
- CNA support with a patient ratio of 1:5-8 (depending on the shift)
- Phlebotomy available for peripheral blood draws
- Resource Nurse available occasionally
- Tele tech overseeing cardiac monitoring
- RT available 24/7
- Hospitalist available on-site 24/7
Charting System/Equipment
- Epic (experience preferred, please inform if lacking experience)
- Alaris
- Omnicell
Orientation
Orientation includes 2 partial days of education followed by 3 twelve-hour shifts on the unit.
Scheduling
- Weekend rotation: Every other
- Holiday expectations: Every other holiday
- Time off approval: Up to 7 days, must extend for a full week off, and no time off during the first 3 weeks of August
Shift Times
- 0700-1900 and 1900-0700
- If the position is posted as variable, scheduling may include both day and night shifts

- May be expected to precept students
- Scrub color required: Navy Blue
