General Information

This unit is a dynamic environment focused on post-surgical care, particularly in solid organ transplants. The unit operates with staff nurses, Patient Care Technicians (PCTs), and Charge RNs, maintaining high standards of patient care.

Patient Care Details

• Typical Patient Ratios: 1:4-5 (may flex to 1:6 during Med/Surg overflow)
• Equipment: Bladder scanners, EKG machines, virtual sitter cameras, and various lifts
• EMR System: Meditech

Qualifications

Required Skills:

• Minimum of 1-year acute care hospital Stepdown/PCU experience
• BLS and ACLS certifications

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with solid organ transplant care (kidney, liver, pancreas)
• Knowledge of higher oxygen delivery modalities (Vapotherm, BiPAP, CPAP)
• Experience with chest tube management and tracheostomy care
• Proficiency in NG/Dobhoff placement and management
• Experience in managing DKA patients and insulin drips
• Strong critical thinking skills for identifying decompensating patients

Typical Procedures

• Wound/drain care for surgical patients
• Frequent lab draws from central lines
• Transfusion of blood products
• Use of soft physical restraints
• Non-invasive cardiac monitoring (NICOM)
• Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
• Plasmapheresis in partnership with HD/infusion nurses
• Care for patients on heparin drips, PCA, and epidurals
• Management of anti-arrhythmic drips and central line care
• Reading telemetry strips
