Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN)

Unit Overview

The Labor and Delivery unit is equipped with:

• 14 Labor and Delivery beds
• 6 Triage beds
• 2 Operating Room suites
• 28 Postpartum beds

We handle an average of 250 births per month and cater to diverse patient needs, including antepartum, high-risk deliveries, substance abuse, pre-eclampsia, and insulin-dependent diabetes.

Certifications Required

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• Fetal Heart Monitoring Certification (Advanced) by AWOHNN
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) for Postpartum nurses

Staffing Ratios

We adhere to AWOHNN guidelines regarding staffing ratios:

• 2:1 for laboring patients
• 1:4 for couplet care

Facilities and Equipment

The unit utilizes:

• Fetal Heart Monitoring System: Fetal Link
• Electronic Medical Record: Cerner

Shift and Staffing Information

• Shifts: 12-hour shifts (7a-7p or 7p-7a)
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Call Requirement: No on-call required; standby may be needed
• Holidays: Rotated with permanent staff
• Charge Nurse: Yes (attempt to avoid patient assignments)
• OB Tech available on day and night shifts

Qualifications

• C-section experience is required, including circulating for surgeries; scrubbing experience is preferred.
• Floating to Postpartum may be required; Postpartum nurses will not float to Labor and Delivery.
• Orientation period of 3 shifts specific to the unit.
