Description
General Information
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated PCU Registered Nurse (RN) to join our healthcare team. Below are the specific requirements and responsibilities for this position.
Job Details
- Beds: 44
- Minimum Experience: 1.5 years of general nursing experience, with 1 year specific to PCU
- Travelers: Must live 100 miles away from any health facility; first-time travelers accepted with 2+ years of experience
- Patient Types: Mixed acuity unit, including Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and MedSurg; experience with patient conditions such as MI, NSTEMI, STEMI, CHF, and dysrhythmia management is required.
- Patient Ratios: Typically 1:4, with the potential for 1:3 depending on acuity levels
Required Certifications
- BLS
- ACLS
- NIHSS
Required Education
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state.
Skills Required
- Experience with cardiac procedural recovery (CABG/TAVR, post-cardiac cath)
- Understanding of MI pharmacology and titratable cardiac/vasoactive medications (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Levo, Dopamine)
- Management of heparin drips, cardiac rhythm interpretation, chest tube management, and TNK administration (preferred)
Support on the Unit
- CNA support with a typical ratio of 1:5-8 depending on the shift
- Phlebotomy available for peripheral blood draws
- No IV/VAT Team available
- Resource Nurse available occasionally
- Tele tech overseeing cardiac monitoring with RN confirmation of strips
- Hospitalist available on-site 24/7
Charting System/Equipment
- Epic (ability to use Epic required; please request manager approval if traveler lacks experience)
- Alaris
- Omnicell
Floating Policy
Expect potential floating to the general PCU or other clinical areas, such as MS/Tele or ICU, to care for PCU level patients, within the scope of practice.
Orientation
Includes two partial days of education followed by three 12-hour shifts on the unit.
Scheduling
- Weekend rotation: every other weekend
- Holiday expectations: every other holiday
- Approval of time off: Up to 7 days, with restrictions during peak periods such as the annual Sturgis Bike Rally in August
- Shift times: 0700-1900, 1900-0700, with variable schedules possible

- May be expected to precept students
- Scrub color: Navy Blue
