Description
Role Overview
This position primarily involves working in the Emergency Department holding unit, supporting various units such as GSH 1, River North, River South, and Float Pool Teams. Nurses will manage diverse patient diagnoses and work in a fast-paced environment, requiring flexibility and resourcefulness.
Unit Information
- MSICU: 40 beds
- CVICU: 10 beds
- PCU: 40 beds
- 2R PCU Observation: 18 beds (can increase to 27 beds when open for overflow)
- CCU: 30 beds
- Medical: 89 beds
- Surgical: 55 beds
- Flex Unit: 9 beds (includes PCU and Medical-Surgical patients)
- Inpatient Rehab: 47 beds across two floors
Patient Types and Common Diagnoses
The following patient types will be encountered:
- ICU: Respiratory failure, GI bleeds, DKA, sepsis, complicated post-operative patients, cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs), flap surgeries, and post-arrest patients.
- PCU: Respiratory compromise, sepsis, renal failure, bleeding disorders, CHF, COPD, pneumonia, and general surgical/orthopedic cases.
- Medical/Surgical: Oncology, COPD, CHF, sepsis, DVT, acute kidney injury (AKI), dialysis, and COVID-19.
- Inpatient Rehab: Stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury (TBI), multi-trauma, post-COVID, and post-ICU patients on vents and tracheostomy care.
Patient Ratios
- ICU: 1:2 based on acuity
- PCU and CCU: 1:4 depending on patient acuity or discharges
- Medical and Surgical: 1:5
- Rehab: 1:8 team model (includes RN, LPN, Tech)
Required Qualifications
- Minimum Experience:
- ICU: 2 years of ICU experience
- PCU: 2 years of PCU experience
- Medical-Surgical: 2 years in an acute care setting
- Certifications:
- ICU: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS
- PCU: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS
- Medical-Surgical: BLS, NIHSS
Role Responsibilities
The Registered Nurses will be required to perform the following:
- Assess and manage patients across different units.
- Provide care for patients with diverse diagnoses, including critical and complex cases.
- Assist with patient transport throughout the hospital and ensure effective communication and patient education.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including respiratory therapy and intensivists.

- ICU: 1:14 techs
- PCU: 1:10 techs
- Medical-Surgical: 1:8-10 techs
- Technology:
- Electronic Medical Records (EMR): EPIC
- IV Pump: Alaris
- Medication dispensing: Pyxis
Scheduling and Orientation
Schedules are provided three weeks in advance, received approximately ten days prior to the schedule beginning. Time off requests are allowable up to five days, with additional requests requiring approval. Orientation will consist of two days of hospital training and one day on the assigned unit
