Job Description

The Registered Nurse specializing in perioperative nursing practice during intraoperative surgical experiences is responsible for delivering safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the operating room and other perioperative services for all patient populations. The perioperative nurse acts as a patient advocate and supervises assigned personnel, while being part of a regular on-call rotation for the Surgery Unit.

Essential Job Functions

• Accept responsibility for the planning, direction, and control of activities.
• Make evaluations and decisions based on measurable criteria.
• Work independently to implement the plan of care by:
• Protecting patients from injury caused by extraneous objects and various sources (chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, thermal).
• Performing accounting procedures to prevent unintended retained surgical items.
• Ensuring the patient’s procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level.
• Managing patient specimens according to organizational policies.
• Communicating the patient’s status to relevant parties throughout the continuum of care.
• Administering medications safely and accurately.
• Performing interventions to maintain wound and tissue perfusion above baseline levels.
• Maintaining the health status of the patient’s various systems (genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and fluid/electrolyte/acid-base balances).
• Implementing measures to protect patients from surgical site infections.
• Safeguarding patient rights, dignity, and privacy.
• Providing age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards.
• Ensuring consistent quality of care across different settings.
• Document nursing care accurately and legibly.
• Collaborate effectively with other disciplines as required.
• Utilize problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to promote effective teamwork.
• Maintain required competencies and pursue professional growth through participation in professional organizations.
• Act as a patient advocate, ensuring privacy and confidentiality of health information.
• Support the organization's mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
• Participate in required education for relevant programs as applicable to the position.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

• Required: Associate of Science in Nursing.
• Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

Licenses/Certifications/Registrations

• Required: Current RN license in the state of Oregon, BLS, ACLS, PALS Certification, TNCC.
• Preferred: CNOR, Peri-op 101, CRASE training (required if travel assignment extends beyond six months).

Experience

• Required: None.
• Preferred: Previous RN circulator experience, Peri-op 101 course, scrub experience.

Shift Information

Day shift: 5x8 schedule. Holiday coverage required.

Minimum Years of Experience

3 years preferred.
