Facility Information

Located in Puyallup, WA, this facility is a Level III Trauma Center with 375 licensed beds.

Unit Information

• 9 Labor and Delivery Rooms (LDR)
• 2 OB Operating Rooms (OB OR)
• 2 OB Post Anesthesia Care Units (PACU)
• 11 Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Beds
• 4 Pediatric Beds
• 20 Mother/Baby Unit Beds
• 18 Bed START Unit for Perinatal Addiction
• 3 OB Emergency Department Beds (20 weeks and above)

The START Unit provides voluntary addiction medicine treatment for pregnant women.

Experience Requirements

Minimum of 1 year of experience required. First-time travelers are welcome.

Patient Types and Common Diagnoses

• Level II Perinatal Center (32 weeks and above)
• Common conditions include hypertension, magnesium administration, and medication management for substance abuse.
• Cares for low-risk patients requiring intermittent monitoring and epidurals.
• Handles antepartum care as needed for fetal monitoring.
• Post-labor, stable patients and babies transition to the Mother/Baby unit, while 32-34 week babies may go to NICU.
• Approximately 175-200 deliveries each month.

Patient Ratios

To follow AWHONN and NANN guidelines:

• 1:1 for active labor
• 1:2 for non-active laboring

Licenses and Certifications Required

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
• Fetal Monitoring Certification (AWHONN or Relia's module)

Required Skills

• Strong experience in Labor & Delivery, including cervical exams, antepartum and labor management, amnioinfusion, epidurals, fetal monitoring, IV administration, and Pitocin.
• Postpartum experience focusing on both mother and baby care during the transition period and basic breastfeeding support.
• Comfortable with couplet care once the mother and baby are stable.
• Familiarity with HUGS Security system and Pyxis medication dispensing systems.

Department Support

The unit operates without CNAs, with surgical techs available Monday through Friday from 0600-1500. Phlebotomy and respiratory therapy services are available 24/7, along with NICU attendings for infants under 34 weeks when necessary.

Technology and Equipment

• EMR: EPIC Stork, GE Centricity
• IV Pumps: Alaris
• Medication Dispensing: Pyxis (experience required)

Floating Policy

Staff may float to areas where they are deemed competent, but will not float to the START Unit. Traditional travelers will float between Labor & Delivery and the Mother/Baby unit.

Orientation

Orientation includes two shifts on-boarding:

• Shift 1: Focuses on patients expected to deliver
• Shift 2: C-section and triage responsibilities

Completion of annual core competencies (HIPAA, OSHA), a medication exam, and a unit competency exam will be required prior to arrival.

Scheduling Details

• Weekend rotation every other week
• Holiday expectations include one major and one minor holiday
• Requests for time off must go through the manager
• Shifts available: 0700-1900 or 1900-0700
• Schedule is created in three-week increments
