Overview

We welcome first-time travelers with a minimum of 18 months of experience in MedSurg and/or ICU, and experience with EPIC or Cerner is required. For candidates with strictly ICU experience, Cerner is mandatory. Please note that staff must be away for 6 months before returning as a traveler.

Unit Information

The assigned home unit will be designated on the first day of orientation.

6 North Trauma Surgical

• Beds: 23
• Patient Types: General Surgery and Vascular surgeries
• Skills required: At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience, wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV skills, medication administration/documentation, and escalations

5 South Neuroscience

• Beds: 33
• Patient Types: CVA, TBI, Seizure, AMS, Spinal Fusion, Craniotomy, Degenerative Diseases, post trauma, angiogram
• Skills required: IV start, blood draws from central lines, trach care, PEG, NGT, Colostomy/Ostomy, Wound Care, Chest tube, Surgical Site Care, C-Collar, Abdominal Binders, Restraints

5 North MedSurg/Oncology

• Beds: 39, 2 Charge RNs (no patient assignment)
• Patient Types: All patient types except stroke and MI, palliative care, ETOH withdrawal, MS/Oncology patients. High acuity and fast-paced MedSurg.
• Patient Ratios: 1:4-5 for RN and LPNs
• Skills required: Trach care, chest tubes, PEG tubes, wound care, drains, foleys, IV starts; Chemo administration, if certified
• Telemetry monitoring is conducted on hallway monitors and by tele techs on the ground floor

3 South Orthopedics

• Beds: 20
• Patient Types: Orthopedic and spine (joint replacements, fractures, fusions, laminectomies)
• Skills required: PCA pumps, wound care (negative pressure dressing), dressing changes, foley, drains (hemovacs/JP drains)

3 North MS/Ortho/Urology

• Beds: 23
• Patient Types: Urology, ENT, ortho, MedSurg
• Skills required: Trach, wound care, wound vacs, IV starts, CVL dressing changes, follow nurse-driven foley protocol

Qualifications

• BLS and NIHSS certifications are required
• Please inquire about telemetry experience and elaborate during the application process

Support on the Unit

• CNA availability (ratio: 1:10-12) for vital signs, ADLs, and glucose checks when available
• Receptionist/HUC present
• Charge nurse available, rarely takes assignments
• Phlebotomy services available
• IV/VAT Team present
• Hospitalist support provided
• Telemetry monitoring tech available; RNs are required to read and interpret telemetry strips
