Description
General Information
Join a dynamic healthcare environment floating among various units including ICUs, PCUs/CCUs, and ED holding. Candidates must possess a minimum of 1 year of ICU experience. Strong ICU skills and prior float pool experience are preferred for first-time travelers.
Patient Types
As an ICU Registered Nurse, you are expected to provide care for the following patient types:
- COVID Patients
- Neuro, Trauma, Medical, Surgical
- Sepsis, Pneumonia, DKA, DTs, Multi-system Failure, Spinal Injuries
- Pre/Post Cath Patients (Radial Approach), General Surgery Patients
- Respiratory Compromise, CHF, COPD, GSW, Stabbings, MVA, Strokes
- TBI, Various Back Surgeries
CVICU Responsibilities
In the CVICU, you will primarily care for:
- Post-operative CABG, Esophagectomy, TAVR, AAA Repair
- Thoracic and Vascular Surgeries, Post-arrest Patients
Excluded Care
Travelers are not expected to provide care for:
- Fresh CABG/TAVR
- EVDs, Post TPA, Any Devices (ECMO, IABP, Impella, Hypothermia Protocol)
Patient Ratios
Patient to nurse ratios are as follows:
- ICU: 1:2
- PCU/ACC/CCU: 1:4
- ER Holding: Same ratio based on patient's level of care
Certifications Required
- ACLS
- BLS
- NIHSS
Skills Required
Key competencies include:
- Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation
- Ventilator and BiPAP Management
- Invasive Line Management
- Ostomy and General Drain Management
- Tracheostomy, Chest Tubes, Lumbar Drains
- IV Medication Titration
Support Structure
Support is available on the unit from:
- Charge Nurse
- Hospitalist, RT, and Intensivist (available 24/7)
- Cardiologist on call 24/7 for CVICU & CCU & Cardiac Short Stay
Charting System
Experience with the Epic charting system is required.
Scheduling Details
Schedules are made for three weeks at a time and typically released 7-10 days in advance. The following scheduling conditions apply:
- Every other weekend required
- Back-to-back weekends may occur (rare)
- No self-scheduling; patterned schedule not guaranteed
- Time off of more than 5 days requires manager approval
Floating Responsibilities
Travelers may float to the following areas:
- Neuro/Trauma/Medical/Cardiac ICU
- CCU (Cardiac Step Down)
- PCU/ACC
- ED Holding
- Med/Surg Units
- Any open surge areas for the above units
- Allenmore location as needed (notification provided in advance)
Orientation
Orientation includes:
- 1 Day General Hospital Orientation
- 1 Day of Unit Orientation (12 hours) on the ICU Unit
- 1 Day of 12 hours on Similar Units
