Description
General Information
This position involves floating within various intensive care units (ICUs) and progressive care units (PCUs) including emergency department holding. A minimum of one year of ICU experience is required. First-time travelers with strong ICU and previous float pool experience are also welcome to apply.
Patient Types
Travelers will provide care for diverse patient populations, including:
- COVID-19 patients
- Neuro, Trauma, Medical, and Surgical cases
- Sepsis, pneumonia, DKA, DTs
- Multi-system failure, spinal injuries
- Pre/post catheterization patients (radial approach)
- General surgery, respiratory compromise, heart failure, COPD
- Gunshot wounds, stabbings, motor vehicle accidents, strokes, TBI
- Various back surgeries
CVICU Responsibilities
In the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), responsibilities will include:
- 24-hour post-operative care for CABG (up to 10 per week), esophagectomy, TAVR (up to 3 per week), AAA repair, and thoracic and vascular surgeries
- Care for post-arrest patients
Exclusions
Travelers will not be assigned to care for:
- Fresh CABG/TAVR patients
- Patients with EVDs, post TPA cases, or any specialty devices (e.g., ECMO, IABP, Impella, hypothermia protocol)
Patient Ratios
- ICU: 1:2
- PCU/CCU: 1:4
- ER Holding: Ratios based on patient's level of care
Certifications Required
- ACLS
- BLS
- NIHSS
Skills Required
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation
- Ventilator and BiPAP management
- Invasive line management
- Ostomy care and general drains
- Tracheostomy care and chest tube management
- Lumbar drain procedures
- IV medication titration
Support on the Unit
Support staff includes:
- Charge Nurse
- Hospitalists, Respiratory Therapists, and Intensivists available 24/7
- Cardiologists on call 24/7 for CVICU and CCU
Charting System
The electronic health record system used is Epic. Experience with this system is required.
Scheduling
The scheduling process is typically organized three weeks in advance, with schedules released 7-10 days prior. Key scheduling details include:
- Every other weekend required
- Back-to-back weekends may occur, but are rare
- No self-scheduling or guarantee of a patterned schedule
- Time off exceeding 5 days requires manager approval
Floating Responsibilities
Travelers may float among various units, including:
- Neuro, Trauma, Medical, and Cardiac ICUs
- CCU (cardiac step-down)
- PCU/ACC
- ED Holding
- Medical-Surgical Units
- Any open surgical areas relevant to the above units
Occasional floating to locations within the region may be required, and travelers will be notified in advance if this occurs.

Orientation consists of the following:
- 1-day general hospital orientation
