Position Overview

The Interventional Radiology/Cardiology Registered Nurse (RN) provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing invasive interventional procedures, including angiography, embolization, cardiac catheterization, and other minimally invasive interventions. This role involves collaborating with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. The RN acts as a patient advocate and is responsible for supervising any assigned personnel. The RN may also be on call for the Interventional Unit as needed and is accountable to the Unit Nurse Manager, House Supervisor, or RN Team Leader.

Essential Job Functions

• Nursing/Circulator Role
  • Administer medications as ordered, including anticoagulants, vasoactive agents, contrast, and emergency drugs.
  • Maintain sterile technique and assist with procedures as needed.
  • Act as a patient advocate and anticipate the needs of the interventionalist.
  • Recognize and respond rapidly to complications such as arrhythmia, bleeding, reactions to contrast, stroke alerts, and cardiac arrest.
• Moderate Sedation Role
  • Monitor patients for moderate sedation without engaging in tasks that might compromise continuous assessment.
  • Verify ASA classification and consult with anesthesia for ASA scores of IV or greater.
  • Provide moderate sedation as per protocol and monitor vital signs, hemodynamics, oxygenation, ventilation, and level of consciousness.
  • Provide nursing interventions for complications.
• Scrub Role
  • Function as the scrub technologist, utilizing sterile techniques to assist physicians during interventional procedures.
  • Prepare and organize sterile instruments, guidewires, catheters, sheaths, and procedural trays.
  • Anticipate physician needs and respond accurately during critical moments.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with vascular anatomy, device sizing, and procedural flow.
• Monitor Role (Hemodynamic & Procedural Monitoring)
  • Record hemodynamic data, pressures, and procedural events.
  • Ensure timely communication of critical findings to the procedural team and accurate documentation of events, medications, and device deployment.
  • Operate and troubleshoot physiological monitoring systems.
  • Document all supplies used, including implants and procedural details accurately.
• Team Support
  • Assist with patient preparation and positioning, as well as connecting monitoring equipment.
  • Collaborate with the clinical team to verify allergies, NPO status, renal function, and other relevant clinical factors.
  • Perform patient identification, procedure verification, and timeout processes per institutional policy.
  • Manage sheath pulls and vascular access as required.
• Department Support
  • Help manage supplies and inventory, including restocking and tracking expiration dates.
  • Assist with room turnover by cleaning and preparing the room for subsequent cases.
  • Ensure devices are cleaned and stored correctly.

Qualifications

• Education:
  • Required: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing; evidence of continuing education appropriate for skill level and practice area.
  • Desired: BSN.
• Experience:
  • Required: Minimum one year of experience in critical care, emergency, cath lab, or interventional radiology.
  • Desired: Three years of experience in Interventional Radiology or Cath Lab; conscious sedation training and monitor role experience preferred.
