Description

Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

The facility serves approximately 150-180 patients daily with various medical needs, including trauma and behavioral health cases. The main Emergency Department (ED) contains 33 beds, including specialized areas for trauma and resuscitation, as well as behavioral health rooms. A vertical care area is available for higher acuity patients and has flexibility based on patient flow.

Minimum Experience

  • Registered Nurse (RN): A minimum of 2 years of Emergency Department experience, excluding travel experience. Candidates with 1.5 years of ED experience and 2 years in other nursing settings may be considered with managerial approval.
  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): A minimum of 2 years of LPN experience in any acute care setting (Medical, Behavioral Health, or Progressive Care Unit). Candidates with 1.5 years of ED experience may be considered with managerial approval.

Patient Types

Care is provided across a diverse patient population, including neonates to geriatrics, and covers a wide range of medical conditions. Key patient types include:

  • Critical to minor conditions, such as sepsis, DKA, respiratory illnesses, and GI bleeds requiring emergent blood products.
  • Heavy trauma cases, particularly during peak seasons, including stab wounds, gunshot wounds, motor vehicle collisions, drownings, and falls.
  • Stroke patients with symptoms within a 24-hour window.
  • Pediatric Intensive Care for critically ill children.
  • Cardiac patients, including those treated in the cardiac catheter lab.

Traveling staff are expected to assist with sexual assault patient care. Familiarity with evidence collection is required, although pelvic exams will not be performed. Resources and assistance will be available.

Patient Ratios

  • Registered Nurse (RN): 1:4-5
  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): 1:4-5
  • ED Tech: 1:10

Required Certifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN): BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC, and PALS are all required. CPI or MAB/MOAB is preferred.
  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and PALS are required. CPI or MAB/MOAB is preferred.

Required Education

Candidates must have completed a nursing education program approved by the relevant nursing board.

Skills Required

  • Experience with various patient types, requiring manager approval for candidates lacking certain experiences.
  • Proficient in ESI assessments during triage.
  • Able to prioritize care effectively, employing critical thinking and communication skills.

Support on the Unit

  • ED Technicians: Ratio of 1:10, with additional support from lead techs.
  • 24/7 coverage by charge nurses and physicians, with hospitalists available for admitted patients.
  • Other support roles include phlebotomy, radiology, and pharmacy technicians.

Orientation

  • 8 hours of facility new employee orientation.
  • 4 hours of emergency department-specific training, plus a minimum of 2 shifts on the unit.

Scheduling

The ED utilizes variable shifts. Staff may be scheduled as needed to fill gaps in staffing, with specific hours outlined for consistency within the weekly schedule.

Holiday Expectations

There may be a need to work on holidays if required.

Additional Information

  • Travelers must reside more than 100 miles from any local facility.
  • All staff may be required to mentor students.
  • Scrub color is navy, with free parking available on site.
