Emergency Department Nurse

Location

Puyallup, WA

Facility Overview

This is a Level III Trauma Center with 375 licensed beds and an average of 200 patients per day. The facility offers emergency services for a diverse patient population, including pediatrics through geriatrics, and handles a range of conditions such as trauma, sepsis, respiratory issues, mental health crises, and more.

Patient Care Overview

  • Types of patients: Trauma, Gunshot Wounds (GSW), COVID, STEMI, Stroke, DKA, mental health issues, geriatric falls, and adult psychiatric emergencies.
  • High-acuity medical services provided, with a significant geriatric population.
  • Pediatric cases are referred to a nearby facility as needed.

Patient Ratios

The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4-5 during the day, with the ability to flex to 5 based on acuity and staffing needs.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of emergency department experience required.
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, NIHSS, CPI/MOAB.
  • Skills in cardiac rhythm interpretation, IV administration, and general ED knowledge required.
  • Experience in procedural sedation, blood administration, and cardiac medication management preferred.
  • Recent experience with EPIC electronic health record system required.

Support and Resources

  • Emergency Room Technicians available for glucose checks and other assistance.
  • Access to a Charge Nurse, who rarely takes patient assignments.
  • Resource/Float Nurses and Respiratory Therapists available 24/7.
  • ED Educator and Security Services present at all times.
  • Social Work Services and Pharmacy support available around the clock.

Charting System and Equipment

  • Utilization of Epic for electronic charting.
  • Access to Alaris and Pyxis systems for medication management.
  • Central and bedside telemetry monitoring is available, though not handled by a dedicated telemetry technician.

Orientation and Training

  • New Employee Orientation includes badge issuance and EPIC training as necessary.
  • The second day consists of a 12-hour shift with a preceptor in the assigned area.
  • Traveler telemetry competency is required prior to the start of the position.

Scheduling Information

Shifts include Days/Mids: 0700, 1100; Mids/Nights: 1500, 1900. Scheduling accommodates individual needs and is provided three weeks in advance, ensuring around 10 days' notice before the schedule begins.

Holidays

Holidays include a requirement to work 2 out of 5 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day).
