Position Overview
This role primarily involves supporting multiple units, including GSH 1 Daily and River North and South, along with Float Pool Teams. The position requires adaptability and resourcefulness as travel between units may be necessary.
Unit Information
- MSICU: 40 beds
- CVICU: 10 beds (no specific CVICU experience required)
- PCU: 40 beds
- 2R PCU Obs: 18 beds, can expand to 27 for overflow
- CCU: 30 beds
- Medical: 89 beds
- Surgical: 55 beds
- Flex Unit: 9 beds (combined PCU and MS patients)
- Inpatient Rehab: 47 beds
- ER Holding Unit: for patients waiting on a bed
- COVID Overflow: as needed
Experience Requirements
- ICU: Minimum of 2 years of ICU experience
- PCU/PCU ER Holds: Minimum of 2 years of PCU experience
- Medical-Surgical: Minimum of 2 years in an acute care setting
Patient Types and Common Diagnoses
- ICU:
- Respiratory failure, GI bleeds, DKA, sepsis, complicated post-operative patients, CVAs, flap surgeries, post-arrest patients, ETOH, IVDA
- Higher Level Therapies: Rotoprone, manual prone, hypothermia protocol, CRRT, TPA (flap surgeries not accepted)
- PCU:
- Respiratory compromise, sepsis, renal failure, bleeding disorders, general medical/surgical patients, CHF, COPD, pneumonia, general and ortho cases
- Medical-Surgical:
- Oncology, psych, general medical/surgical including post-op, COPD, CHF, sepsis, DVT, AKI, dialysis, COVID
- Rehab:
- Neuro cases: stroke, spinal cord injury, TBI, multi-trauma, post-COVID, post-ICU
- Patients on vents/traches, general Med-Surg level acuity
- ED Holding:
- Fast-paced unit with a mix of diagnoses; ratios include 1:2 for ICU patients, 1:4 for PCU, and 1:5 for MS
Patient Ratios
- ICU: 1:2 based on acuity
- PCU and CCU: 1:4 depending on acuity or patient discharges
- Medical and Surgical: 1:5
- Rehab: 1:8 team model (RN, LPN, Tech)
Licenses and Certifications Required
- ICU: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS
- PCU: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS
- Medical-Surgical: BLS, NIHSS
Required Skills
- ICU: Cardiac rhythm interpretation, vent management, invasive line management, ostomy care, general drains, tracheostomy care
- PCU: Cardiac rhythm interpretation, chest tubes, lumbar drains, tracheostomy, IV medication titration
