Location: Puyallup, WA
Department: Emergency Department (ED)
Facility Type: Level III Trauma Center
Licensed Beds: 375
Average Patient Load: 200 patients per day
Patient Population
The Emergency Department serves a diverse patient demographic, including:
- Pediatrics to geriatrics
- Trauma cases
- Gunshot wounds (GSW)
- Sepsis
- COVID-19
- STEMI (Significant cases)
- Stroke
- Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
- Mental health issues
- Respiratory problems
- Geriatric cases, including falls and STEMI
- Adult psychiatric cases
Patient Ratios
Day shift staffing ratios: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients, with flexibility based on acuity and staffing levels.
Required Certifications
Candidates must hold the following certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- CPI/MOAB (Crisis Prevention Institute/Management of Aggressive Behavior)
Essential Skills
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:
- General Emergency Department experience
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation
- IV skills and knowledge of medication administration
- Experience with procedural sedation
- Blood administration
- TNK administration (preferred)
- Knowledge of cardiac medications
- Recent experience with the EPIC charting system
Support on the Unit
The Emergency Department includes a variety of support roles such as:
- ER Technicians for glucose checks and assistance with splinting
- Resource/Float Nurse
- Respiratory Therapists available 24/7
- ED Educator
- Increased security presence for safety 24/7
- House Supervisor on-site 24/7
- Social Work Services available in the ED 24/7
- Pharmacy support available 24/7 during codes
Charting System and Equipment
The following systems and equipment are utilized:
- EPIC (recent experience required)
- Alaris infusion pumps
- Pyxis medication management system
- Central and bedside telemetry monitoring
Orientation Process
Orientation includes the following:
- Day 1: NEO (New Employee Orientation), EPIC training (if needed), mental health area rotation
- Day 2: 12-hour shift with a preceptor
- Completion of Traveler Telemetry Competency required before starting
Scheduling Information
The position offers varied scheduling options:
- Possible 48-hour contract
- Shifts: Days/Mids (0700, 1100), Mids/Nights (1500, 1900)
- Shifts are assigned on a weekly basis and may change as needed
- Schedule provided 3 weeks in advance
- Weekend shifts will vary based on departmental needs
- 2 of 5 major holidays required
