Job Description
- Role: Pediatric Critical Care float pool RN
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM), 36 hours/week
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend plus holiday rotation
- Patient Ratios: 1:2 or 1:3
- Float Requirement: RN will float to all Pediatric units within Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital (CVPICU, NICU, PICU) within scope of practice
- Experience Required: Minimum 2 years Pediatric ICU experience
- First-time travelers accepted if experience requirement met
- License Required: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license
- Certifications Required: BLS, PALS (American Heart Association only)
- Preferred Experience: ECMO, CRRT
- Block Scheduling: Possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
- Local Radius: 60 miles; locals accepted on a case-by-case basis
- Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Hurricane Season: June through November; travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during this time
Required Licenses & Certifications
- RN License: South Carolina or Multi-State/Compact RN license
- BLS: American Heart Association (AHA) only
- PALS: Required for all Pediatric units (AHA only)
- Additional Preferred Certifications:
- ACLS (not required for pediatric units)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA/AAP only
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - as required, not required for ER RNs
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) - as applicable
- Other: Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
Experience & Competencies
- Minimum 2 years Pediatric ICU experience required
- ECMO and CRRT experience preferred
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exams required as applicable
- Color Blind Testing required prior to start
- Competency exams required, including Pediatric OR competency if applicable
Schedule & Work Conditions
- 3x12 hour day shifts (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
- Weekend rotation every other weekend plus holidays
- Floating across pediatric critical care units as needed
- Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
- Potential emergency response assignments during hurricane season (June-November)
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical exam updated annually, attesting ability to meet job demands
- Fit test for N95 mask (specific models required) within 90 days of start, renewed annually
- Immunizations and titers required or proof of immunity for:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or vaccination series)
- Varicella (chickenpox)
- Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination form)
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray follow-up
- Annual TB questionnaire completion required
- 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination documentation required during flu season (September 30 - April 18) or approved medical/religious exemption
- COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
- Background check including 7 years of history and multiple registries
- Employment and education verifications required
- Color blind test required prior to start
Documentation & Compliance
- Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Complete employment application including all PTO, contract assignments, and agency names with no unaccounted gaps
- Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder
- Photo for badge: clear, passport-style, solid light background, frontal view, business casual attire
- Facility-specific orientation modules must be completed prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
- Upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into facility system prior to start
- All certifications must be current and not expiring within 30 days of start date
- Driver’s license, Social Security card, and I-9 form required for eligibility verification
Additional Notes
- Locals accepted on a case-by-case basis
- All Return to Office (RTO) requests must be submitted at time of application and are subject to unit approval
- Facility may call off shifts as needed (1 shift per 2 weeks allowed)
- Travelers should be prepared for possible emergency response duties during hurricane season (June-November)
