Description
Neuro Med-Surg Acute RN Position
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 18 weeks
Unit & Patient Information
- Department: Neuro Med-Surg Acute
- Unit Size: 54 beds (2 semi-private)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Common Diagnoses/Patient Types: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
Requirements & Qualifications
- Required Certifications: BLS (AHA), NIHSS
- Experience:
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Previous travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Prior experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Skills:
- RNs must titrate drips, including heparin drip based on PTT (heparin drip experience required)
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse: Present 24/7, generally does not take patient assignments unless short-staffed
- House Supervisor: Present 24/7
- Nurse Aides/Patient Care Techs:
- Day & Evening shifts: 1:9-10 ratio
- Night shift: 1:10-12 ratio
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment:
- High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare)
- RNs troubleshoot but do not manage vents, CPAP, BiPAP
- Telemetry:
- House-wide telemetry with Phillips monitors
- Nurses do not read their own strips
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
- Shift Times: Example night shift 1900-0700
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
- Call/Standby: None
- Floating:
- Float rotation with general unit staff
- If floated outside general unit, only assigned tasks within competency and with trained nurse support
- Orientation: 2 days unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor
- Dress Code:
- No scrub color requirement
- Tattoos must be covered on duty
- No piercings except ears
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within 50-mile radius
- Drug-Free Campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours (guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation)
- OSF Call Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or pay required for missed shifts
