Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract) - Columbus, Ohio

Job Overview

  • Unit: Medical Oncology Progressive Care Unit (PCU) - High Acuity
  • Shift: Nights (Day/Night shift option available)

Unit Information

  • 36-bed Oncology Telemetry unit with over 24 beds dedicated to PCU level of care
  • Primarily medical oncology patients with some pediatric patients (rare, pediatric experience not required)
  • High acuity PCU patients with some med-surg cases
  • Patient diagnoses include solid tumors, orthopedic oncology, and thoracic oncology

Schedule & Orientation

  • Self-scheduling requests accepted before final schedule is posted
  • Orientation:
    • Week 1: Monday to Friday, dayshift orientation
    • Week 2: 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor

Required Experience & Certifications

  • Oncology experience preferred but not required
  • Minimum 2 years oncology experience preferred
  • Required certifications:
    • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Previous travel experience preferred

Patient Ratios

  • Med Surg Telemetry: 1:4-5
  • PCU: 1:3
  • Required to float within units of equivalent or lower acuity

  • Interpretation of dysrhythmias
  • Use of rapid response teams
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • Accessing ports
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line and peripheral line care/management
  • PICC line management
  • Starting IVs
  • Heparin protocols
  • Managing cardiac drips (no titration)
  • PCA pumps
  • Titration of cardiac drips
  • Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
  • External CPAP/BIPAP
  • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
  • Interpretation of ABGs
  • Nasal cannula use
  • Tracheostomy management

Compliance & Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Education accreditation verification required (accredited nursing programs)
  • Fingerprinting (Ohio BCI & FBI) required within 1 year of start, with specific code 3701.881
  • Pending background check attestation allowed if fingerprint results are pending
  • Various certifications must be current and verified (BLS, ACLS, NIH, etc.)
  • Unit-specific competency exams required, including dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam annually
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, documenting good health and free of contagious disease
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap (adult dose)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • TB questionnaire
    • MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccination or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer
    • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but recommended
  • Two professional references required (at least one from a manager or formal leadership)
  • Employment application and skills checklist required

Policies & Training

  • Annual review and acknowledgment of dress code and hand hygiene policy
  • Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
  • Ethics and compliance policies must be reviewed and signed annually
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required annually

This position is ideal for RNs with experience or interest in oncology and progressive care nursing, who are comfortable working in a high-acuity telemetry environment with flexible scheduling options.
