Job Opportunity: Med-Surg Acute Care RN

Unit & Patient Information

• Department: Med-Surg Acute Care
• Unit Size: 18 beds (mostly private rooms, 1 semi-private)
• Patient Type: General medical patients with various diagnoses
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Days: 4-5 patients per nurse
  • Nights: 5-6 patients per nurse

Shift Details

• Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm & 7pm-7am)
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Sat/Sun days, Fri/Sat nights)
• Holiday Requirement: Holiday rotation per policy
• Call Requirement: No call required
• Scheduling: Travelers may discuss additional scheduling preferences with unit leadership

Orientation & Training

• Orientation: One 12-hour shift with a unit preceptor
• Non-billable Orientation Hours: 12 hours
• Required Certifications:

  • BLS (AHA) required
  • IL RN licensure required (or application in process)
  • ACLS preferred for Charge RN position

Clinical Responsibilities & Skills

• Experience: 1+ year hospital experience preferred
• IV Skills: RNs expected to attempt IV starts; inpatient phlebotomy team available if unsuccessful
• Drip Titration: RNs required to titrate Heparin drips
• Respiratory Equipment: Patients may require oxygen up to 6L NC, stable BiPAP/CPAP at night or PRN; RNs troubleshoot but do not manage advanced respiratory equipment
• Telemetry: Patients requiring telemetry monitored remotely; unit uses Phillips equipment; RNs do not read their own strips
• Charge Nurse: 24-hour Charge RN coverage; charge nurse may have patient assignment
• House Supervisor: 24/7 coverage

Support Staff

• Patient Care Techs: Two PCTs per shift; ratio approximately 9:1 when full, otherwise split evenly
• Tele/Monitor Techs: House-wide telemetry department monitors patients remotely
• Unit Clerk: 24-hour coverage

Additional Information

• Scrub Color/Dress Code: Any color scrubs allowed; staff must provide their own; no pediatric scrubs
• Floating: Travel RNs are first to float to other units as needed
• Hospital Support: Hospitalist and Intensivist in-house 24/7; Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy available 24/7
• Drug-Free Campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels

This position is suitable for RNs with Med-Surg acute care experience looking for a 4+ month contract in a supportive hospital environment with stable patient ratios and comprehensive unit support.
