Description
Nephrology RN Opportunity – Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Department: Nephrology
- Beds: 21 total (all private except one semi-private room)
- Equipment: Overhead lift equipment in all rooms
- Patient Ratios:
- Day shift: 1 RN to 4-5 patients
- Night shift: 1 RN to 5-6 patients
- Nurse Aides/Patient Care Techs (PCTs):
- Ratio: 1 PCT per 10-11 patients on both day and night shifts
- Duties: Vital signs, baths, activity assistance, accu-cheks, Foley catheter removal, continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) management (not titrating)
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
- Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
- Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis patients
- Post-operative care for parathyroidectomies (some with auto-implants)
- Ileal conduit creations
- TURPs, prostatectomies, kidney stones
- Graft/fistula repairs
- Deceased and living donor kidney and pancreas transplant patients (new post-op and rejection)
- Transplant biopsies
- General medical overflow patients
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Active RN license (Illinois)
- BLS (AHA)
Experience & Skills
- General medical background required
- Preferred: nephrology or urology experience
- Positive attitude, teamwork, and dependability emphasized
- RNs are not required to titrate drips
Clinical Support & Equipment
- Respiratory Therapy:
- No ventilators on unit
- BiPAP/CPAP used only for sleep apnea
- Respiratory therapists available for treatments and assistance
- RNs administer inhalers
- Telemetry:
- Monitored remotely by TeleTechs
- Nurses receive pages for rhythm changes; no need to interpret strips
- Phillips monitors used
Shift & Scheduling
- Shift options: 3 shifts of 12 hours each
- Days: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
- Nights: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Self-scheduling available; flexibility to accommodate traveler needs while meeting unit requirements
- Weekend Requirement:
- Day shift: Typically 2 weekend 12-hour shifts plus 1 weekday 12-hour shift every other weekend
- Night shift: Weekends are Friday, Saturday, Sunday; fewer weekend shifts due to in-house staff coverage
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday, negotiable
- No call or standby shifts required
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation: 3 days with a preceptor
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
Additional Information
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Drug-free campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels
- Dress code:
- Any color scrubs allowed
- No artificial/gel nails, chipped polish, visible tattoos, or piercings
- Females may wear one pair of simple earrings
- Charge Nurse and House Supervisor present 24/7
- Charge Nurse usually does not take patient assignments but may if staffing requires
- Floating:
- May float to general medical units, ED, or ICUs as a sitter or help-all, but infrequent
