Registered Nurse (Critical Care Float Pool) - Columbus, Ohio

Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 3x12 hour shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM (36 hours/week)


Job Description

Join the Critical Care Float Pool for weekend night shifts with flexibility to meet unit needs. Nurses will float to various ICUs based on staffing and patient acuity, including:

  • Neuro ICU
  • Surgical ICUs
  • Medical ICUs (MICU x2)
  • Cardiology/Diagnostics
  • CVICU
  • SICU / MICU / NCCU

Float Policy:
Nurses must float within units of equivalent or lower acuity.


Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of ICU experience
  • BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications (required)
  • Proficiency with EPIC electronic health record system (required)
  • Experience with:
    • IV starts
    • Telemetry
    • Ventilator management
  • Previous travel nursing experience strongly preferred

Certifications & Competencies

  • BLS (Basic Life Support): AHA Instructor/Provider or RQI accepted
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): AHA Instructor/Provider or RQI accepted
  • NIH Stroke Certification: Required for most ICU, PCU, ED, and Brain & Spine units; 2-year expiration
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam: Required within 1 year of start and annually thereafter; minimum passing score 76%
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam: Required prior to start
  • Unit-Specific Competency Exam: Required
  • State License Verification: Required within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for RNs
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement: Required annually

Background & Compliance

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
  • Education accreditation verification from recognized nursing accrediting bodies (CCNE, ACEN, NLN CNEA, CASN)
  • Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending
  • Proof of fingerprint completion required (BCI & FBI) with specific Ohio codes
  • Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
  • Annual review and acknowledgment of ethics and compliance policies
  • Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire required annually
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters if low titer
  • Hepatitis B: Titer or 3-vaccine series or signed declination
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemption requires documentation
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31); mask required if declining
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended

Additional Requirements

  • Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leader
  • Employment application and skills checklist required
  • Compliance with facility-specific documents and policies

This position offers the opportunity to work across multiple critical care units in a large academic medical center with a supportive float pool model. Ideal candidates will have strong ICU experience, flexibility, and the required certifications and competencies to provide high-quality care in a dynamic environment.
