Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Acute Care (Med-Surg Acute Care RN)

Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit & Patient Care Details

• Department: Medical Surgical Acute Care
• Beds: 18 (all private rooms except one semi-private)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Days: 4-5 patients per nurse
  • Nights: 5-6 patients per nurse
• Patient Types: General medical patients with various diagnoses
• Common Drips: Heparin (RNs required to titrate)
• Respiratory Equipment: Oxygen up to 6L NC, stable BiPAP/CPAP at night or PRN
• Telemetry: Patients monitored remotely by telemetry department; unit uses Phillips equipment
• Support Staff:

  • Two Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) per shift (ratio approx. 9:1 when full)
  • Unit Clerk (PCL) with 24-hour coverage
  • House Supervisor 24/7
  • Hospitalist/Intensivist in-house 24/7
  • Respiratory Therapist (RT) in-house 24/7
  • Pharmacy staff prepare all medications 24/7
  • Inpatient phlebotomy team available for blood draws

Shift & Scheduling

• Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm & 7pm-7am)
• Shift Report: At shift change (7am and 7pm)
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Sat/Sun days, Fri/Sat nights)
• Holiday Requirement: Holiday rotation per policy
• Call/Standby: No call required
• Floating: Travel RNs are first to float to other units as needed
• Scheduling Flexibility: Travelers may collaborate with unit leadership for scheduling preferences

Orientation & Training

• Orientation: One 12-hour shift with unit preceptor for travel RNs
• Certifications Required:

  • BLS (AHA) required
  • Illinois RN license required (or application in process)
  • ACLS preferred for Charge RN position
• Experience: Minimum 1 year hospital experience preferred
• Charge Nurse: 24-hour Charge RN coverage; may have patient assignment at times

Additional Information

• Dress Code: Any color scrubs allowed; staff must provide their own (no pediatric scrubs)
• Drug-Free Campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels
• Orientation Hours: 12 non-billable hours
• Call Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty
• RNs expected to attempt IV starts; unit resources available if unsuccessful

This position is suitable for RNs with Med-Surg acute care experience looking for a 13-week contract in a well-supported hospital environment with stable patient ratios and comprehensive support services.
