Registered Nurse - Oncology (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio

Job Overview

  • Unit: 17 James Medical Oncology (Day/Night shifts)
  • Oncology experience preferred but not required
  • Staffing ratios goal: 1:4 (can be 1:5)
  • Weekends: Variable based on unit needs
  • No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests submitted for final schedule balancing
  • Orientation:
    • Week 1: Monday-Friday, day shift orientation
    • Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor
  • Floating required to other MedSurg Oncology units
  • Previous travel experience preferred

Experience & Patient Population

  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience required
  • Patient age groups: Adults and Geriatrics
  • Common patient diagnoses:
    • Breast Cancer
    • Lung Cancer
    • Prostate Cancer
    • Pancreatic Cancer
    • Colon Cancer
    • Esophageal Cancer
    • Antineoplastic chemotherapy encounters
  • Unit cares for all solid tumor cancers across the cancer journey, including end-of-life care
  • Heavy focus on infection prevention and patient fall protocols
  • Patients may have true medical-surgical issues

Required Certifications & Skills

  • Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • Telemetry interpretation and monitoring skills
  • Preferred:
    • ONS Chemo certification
  • Computerized charting experience with EPIC

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881)
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
  • Education accreditation verification from accredited nursing programs (CCNE, ACEN, NLN CNEA, CASN)
  • Drug testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, benzodiazepines, THC, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Immunizations and health requirements:
    • Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • TB questionnaire in lieu of annual TB test
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - 2 vaccines or positive titer with boosters if needed
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Varicella - 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination (mask required if declined during flu season)
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended
  • Annual background check required by Aya Healthcare
  • References: 2 professional references required, at least one from a manager or formal leadership

Competency & Testing Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required prior to start
  • Unit-specific competency exam required
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%)
  • Remediation process in place for failed EKG exams with up to 3 attempts

Additional Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required
  • Confidential Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training and reporting form required
  • Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required annually
  • License verification and NURSYS verification required within 30 days of start
  • Employment application and skills checklist required
