Job Opportunity: Family Birthing Center Nurse

Location: Galesburg, Illinois

Unit Details

• Unit: Family Birthing Center
• Labor & Delivery Beds: 9 total (4 main labor rooms, 5 postpartum beds convertible to labor rooms)
• Operating Room Suites: 1
• Triage Beds: 2
• Postpartum Beds: 5
• Births per Day: 1-5
• Births per Year: 575-650
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: Follow AWHONN guidelines

Required Certifications

• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

Experience & Skills

• Must have teamwork and communication skills
• Experience working with laboring patients, C-sections, postpartum, and nursery patients
• Ability to work with providers who are not always in-house
• Familiarity with EPIC electronic medical records system
• RNs are required to titrate drips (e.g., Pitocin up to 20 mu/min)

Patient Population & Care

• Level II nursery: cares for babies 32 weeks and older
• Common patient conditions: preeclampsia, hypertension, gestational diabetes, BMI up to 50
• Respiratory equipment available: CPAP (no vents for babies; transfers to higher level care if needed)
• OB/Neonatologist: on-call 24/7, not always in-house
• Monitoring: Telemetry available; RNs read strips
• Electronic Fetal Monitoring System: OBIX

Staffing & Support

• Charge Nurse present majority of the time
• House Supervisor available 24/7
• OB techs and nurse aides available on unit
• No floating required
• No call or standby requirement

Scheduling & Orientation

• Shift: 7 PM to 7 AM (36 hours per week)
• Weekend Requirement: Every third weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday if it falls within contract period
• Orientation: 1 day hospital orientation plus 2-3 shifts unit-specific orientation
• Dress Code: Jade scrubs provided

• Drug-free campus; negative drug screen required
• Local clinicians within 50 miles may have different pay considerations (not included here)
