Job Summary: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Newark, New Jersey
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Schedule

  • Primary Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Floating: May float to Pediatrics and NICU; additional float units possible based on skill set and hospital needs (confirm with traveler)
  • Schedule: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday)
  • Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:2+
  • Unit Size: 19 beds

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of PICU critical care experience required
  • 1 year of cardiac experience strongly preferred (both must be documented on skills checklist)
  • Prior travel experience required (first-time travelers are not accepted)

Skills & Competencies Required

  • Experience with Medtronic pacemakers and telemetry monitoring
  • Proficient in BIPAP/CPAP, ventilators, high flow nasal cannula, and tracheostomies
  • Charting system: EPIC

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA required (RQI and instructor cards acceptable)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – AHA required (RQI and instructor cards acceptable)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – Required for all adult critical care units; confirm if required for PICU
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – Preferred but not required
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit and role; confirm with program coordinator

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframe
  • Physical exam within the last 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start (10-panel minimum)
  • Background check within 30 days of start, including criminal, alias, and nationwide searches
  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history
  • Work history verification for at least 1 year prior to start (New Jersey state requirement)
  • Skills checklist updated annually
  • References: 2 within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
  • Influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
  • Respiratory medical clearance and fit testing (on-site fit test mandatory)
  • Latex allergy questionnaire if applicable
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required within 72 hours of signing
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for critical care units
  • Pass/fail testing for EKG and medication knowledge with remediation policy

Additional Notes

  • Scrub color: Navy Blue
  • Must complete facility-specific floating policy for every new assignment
  • Annual education sign-off and safety manual acknowledgment required
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (online and in-person portions)
  • CEUs (Continuing Education Units) required as applicable, with specific requirements for certain specialties
  • Candidates must bring all required documentation on the first day of orientation

This position is ideal for experienced PICU nurses with cardiac experience who have prior travel contract experience and are comfortable working in a fast-paced pediatric critical care environment with floating responsibilities.
