Job Opportunity: Surgical Technologist

Location: Rochester, Michigan
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and Surgical Team members, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during general surgical procedures. The role includes anticipating the needs of the surgical team, supporting patient preparation and transport, maintaining a safe and clean operating room environment, and responding to emergent situations according to established procedures.


Key Responsibilities

  • Scrub in on general surgical procedures.
  • Prepare the operating room by setting up tables, instruments, and supplies according to the surgery type.
  • Ensure proper functioning of instruments and equipment; report repairs as needed.
  • Follow departmental policies, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Manage sterile supplies cost-effectively and handle surgical instruments carefully.
  • Respond to emergent situations and notify appropriate personnel.
  • Deliver supplies to units and ancillary departments.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the operating room and storage areas.
  • Provide comfort and support to pre-operative patients with sensitivity to their care and privacy.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and department information.
  • Participate in job enrichment, career progression discussions, and ongoing education.
  • Assist RNs with admitting, transferring, and discharging patients from the OR.
  • Assist leadership with supply management and par level adjustments.
  • May train or precept new Surgical Technologist employees.
  • Participate in audits, department task forces, and support governance changes.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Physical ability to lift and move patients, push/pull/lift case carts, instrument trays, and equipment.
  • Ability to work in patient care environments with potential exposure to communicable diseases, unpleasant odors, acute patient conditions, hazardous gases, and confidential information.
  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Minimum 1 year of Surgical Technologist experience preferred.

Education & Certification Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
  • Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program preferred.
  • Current BLS certification required or must obtain BLS certification within one month of start date.
