Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Operating Room)

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN)
  • Unit: 30 Bed Operating Room Unit for Pediatric patients (Newborn to 17 years)
  • Shift: 5 shifts per week, 8 hours each
  • Call Requirements: Yes, self-scheduled with some weeknights and weekends on-call duties
  • Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours per week
  • Floating: No floating outside scope of practice
  • Block Scheduling: Cannot guarantee block scheduling
  • Locals Accepted: No (must be outside 75-mile radius)
  • Pending License: Accepted for submission, but active license required to start
  • Flu Shot: Required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless medically exempt
  • COVID Vaccine: Not required

Experience & Skills Requirements

  • Minimum RN Experience: 2 years (minimum)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Preferred but not required
  • No First Timers: Candidates must have prior travel experience (no first-time travelers accepted)
  • Specialty Skills Required:
    • Pediatric General OR
    • General OR
    • Circulate and Scrub experience (manager specifically wants both)
  • Preferred Skills:
    • IV Start
    • Experience in pediatric and women's specialty settings
    • Robotic surgery experience is a plus

Certifications Required

  • Mandatory:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only, no pending or onsite completion allowed
  • Recommended/May be Required (depending on unit):
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure)
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
    • Chemotherapy certification (confirm with PM team if required)
  • Testing:
    • Pass/Fail testing for EKG, Medication Calculation, and Blood Administration required for nursing candidates
  • Other:
    • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification required for certain units (ER, Surgical, Trauma ICU, Behavioral Health)

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Must be completed within 1 year of start, signed by appropriate healthcare provider, confirming good health and no physical limitations
  • Drug Testing: Must be within 30 days of start, includes a full panel (Amphetamines, Barbiturates, Cocaine, Opiates, Phencyclidine, Benzodiazepines, Methadone, Propoxyphene)
  • Vaccinations & Immunizations:
    • Flu vaccine required during flu season unless medically or religiously exempt
    • Tdap (Tetanus/Diphtheria) vaccination required (declinations not accepted)
    • COVID-19 vaccine not mandatory (proof or declination accepted)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccinations or positive titers required
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titers required
    • Hepatitis B vaccination or titer documentation required
  • Fit Mask Testing: Annual fit testing required for N95 masks; accommodations available if unable to pass fit test
  • Background Checks:
    • 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start
    • National sex offender registry check within 30 days
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required and must be completed independently within 30 days of start

Additional Requirements

  • References: Minimum 1 reference required from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within the past year
  • Skills Checklist: Annual specialty-specific skills checklist required
  • Orientation: Two-day orientation (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management training
  • Documentation: Must submit all required documents including license verification, certifications, background checks, and health records prior to start
  • Residency Declaration: Required if working on a compact license (driver’s license must match compact state license)
