Job Opportunity: Respiratory Therapist II - Pediatrics
Location: Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Employment Type: Clinical-Allied
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Under the direction of department management and according to established policies and procedures, the Respiratory Therapist II demonstrates an advanced level of knowledge in respiratory care and assigned patient care areas.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide competent respiratory care including airway management, mechanical ventilator management, oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, and respiratory care procedures to assess, prevent, stabilize, or remedy respiratory dysfunction.
- Administer standard respiratory care such as aerosol medication delivery, bedside pulmonary function testing, breathing exercises, oxygen therapy, and arterial punctures.
- Manage all aspects of airway care including aspiration of established airways, tracheostomy care and tube changes, endotracheal intubations, and extubations.
- Perform pulmonary function testing as needed.
- Transport pediatric and neonatal patients per protocol when working with Carolina Air Care.
- Perform advanced respiratory care procedures per protocol, including UAC, UVC, IV insertion, chest tube insertion, needle decompression, ABGs, and blood glucose monitoring.
- Manage extracorporeal circulation for cardiac and respiratory support when working with ECMO.
- May be required to be on-call during days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Perform all aspects of ventilator care including setup, verification, specialized ventilator modes, patient monitoring, and weaning techniques.
- Maintain and improve job knowledge and skills; function independently with minimal supervision; serve as a resource to other staff.
Required Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist.
Education
- Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
Certifications & Licensure
- Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).
- Depending on the practice area, must have at least one of the following certifications:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- CPFT (Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist)
- OR an advanced practice certificate to administer moderate sedation in Bronchoscopy Lab.
- All certifications must be maintained as required by the certifying body.
Additional Skills
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret clinical information and technical procedures.
- Strong documentation skills.
- Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and staff.
- Mathematical skills including fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
- Strong reasoning ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret a wide variety of technical situations.
