Job Opportunity: O.R. Technician (CST) - Contract
Location: New York, NY
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
A Surgical Technician (Certified Surgical Technologist - CST) assists in operating room procedures under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. Responsibilities include preparing the operating room, maintaining aseptic technique, assisting the surgical team during procedures, handling specimens, and supporting patient care before, during, and after surgery.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform surgical scrub, gowning, and gloving procedures following aseptic principles.
- Set up sterile instrument tables and prepare supplies based on the type of operation.
- Assist in draping patients and operative areas.
- Anticipate and provide instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies to the surgeon.
- Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments with the circulating nurse.
- Monitor aseptic technique and correct contamination immediately.
- Assist in specimen care and handling.
- Assist with application of dressings and securing drainage systems.
- Assist in patient transfers using approved devices.
- Decontaminate equipment and clean the operating room after procedures.
- Assist circulating nurse with assembling supplies and providing special equipment.
- Position patients correctly and maintain a sterile environment.
- Observe and control operating room traffic and personnel to maintain asepsis.
- Prepare medications or solutions under direct RN supervision (excluding narcotics).
- Assist with operational needs such as patient transport and updating preference cards.
Required Qualifications
- Certification: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification is required.
- Education: High school diploma required; courses in operating room technology, science, biology, or chemistry preferred.
- Experience: Experience in an operating room setting preferred.
- Skills:
- Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly in English.
- Visual and auditory acuity to assess patients and environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse individuals.
- Physical stamina and dexterity to perform surgical support tasks.
Work Setting
- Exposure to various clinical conditions, technologies, and environmental settings typical of perioperative services.
- Per diem position with a limit of 16 shifts within 13 weeks.
Additional Notes
- Must follow OSHA and facility policies regarding PPE and safety in the surgical suite.
- No dispensing of narcotics or controlled substances; only assist with medication preparation under RN supervision.

- Specialty Experience: Prefer experience in operating room technology (no explicit minimum years stated).
