Description
Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Medical-Surgical Telemetry
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Summary
- Work in a secure corrections health unit environment.
- Float between various Oncology Medical-Surgical (MS) and Progressive Care Unit (PCU) telemetry units.
- Shifts may include days, nights, or a rotating schedule based on department needs.
- Oncology experience preferred but not required.
- EPIC charting experience is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide nursing care on Oncology Medical-Surgical and Telemetry units.
- Ensure staff safety in a locked corrections unit with controlled access.
- Manage patient care for oncology and non-oncology diagnoses including solid tumors, hematology, surgical procedures, COPD, sepsis, pneumonia, and more.
- Perform cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation, and emergency response.
- Administer IV therapy, blood products, and manage central/peripheral lines and PICC lines.
- Manage respiratory support including CPAP/BIPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula, oxygen therapy, and tracheostomy care.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, respiratory services, social services, and rapid response teams.
Work Environment
- Locked corrections unit with a nurse-to-patient ratio of approximately 1:3 in PCU and 1:4-5 in MS.
- Corrections officers maintain a 1:2 officer-to-inmate ratio.
- Use of Pyxis medication system and EPIC documentation system.
- Weekend shifts vary based on unit needs.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Minimum of 1 year of Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience within the last year.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Experience with EPIC charting system.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse in Medical-Surgical or Telemetry settings (based on typical expectations for this specialty and environment).
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (Basic Life Support) required.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually.
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required prior to start.
- Additional certifications such as ACLS, PALS, or others may be required depending on unit assignment.
- Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgment.
Background & Health Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check including FBI and BCI fingerprinting required prior to start.
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program required.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming good health and freedom from contagious disease.
- Immunizations and/or titers required: Tdap, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B.
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or documented declination required during flu season.
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended.
Additional Requirements
- Two professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
- Completion of employment application and skills checklist.
- Compliance with dress code and hand hygiene policies.
- Completion of fraud, waste, and abuse training prior to start and annually.
- Adherence to ethics and compliance policies.
