Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – Observation Unit / Med-Surg / Telemetry / Oncology
Location: Columbus, Ohio

Job Description
- Work in an Observation Unit managing patients with anticipated short stays (up to two midnights).
- Patient care includes telemetry, med-surg, and oncology-related cases.
- Patient diagnoses include dehydration, electrolyte abnormalities, nausea/vomiting, chemotherapy/radiation symptom management, acute kidney injury, palliative/pain control, urinary tract infections, syncope, post-procedure overnight stays, hospice transition, PEG tube/line placement, and fever of unknown origin.
- Floating may be required occasionally to assist the Emergency Department with inpatient med-surg telemetry patients.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is approximately 1:4 with a charge nurse on assignment.
- Orientation to the unit will be provided.
- Scrubs are not provided; dress code colors are navy blue and white.
Required Skills & Experience
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Minimum 2 years of Med-Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with experience within the last year.
- Experience interpreting dysrhythmias.
- PICC line management experience.
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA Instructor/Provider or RQI acceptable.
- Preferred: ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse).
Required Licenses
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for Ohio.
Competencies & Exams
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%).
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required prior to start.
- Unit-specific competency exams may be required.
Background & Screening Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and state fingerprinting.
- Monthly monitoring through federal exclusion lists (EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG).
- Education accreditation verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start; must be completed under specific state codes.
- Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start.
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire required annually.
- Immunizations or titers required for:
- Measles (Rubeola) – 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer.
- Mumps – 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer.
- Rubella – 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer.
- Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions require documentation).
- Hepatitis B – titer or 3-vaccine series (declination accepted).
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap – adult dose required.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene).
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination required during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31).
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended.
Additional Requirements
- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership.
- Employment application and skills checklist required.
- Annual acknowledgment of dress code and hand hygiene policies.
- Annual completion of orientation safety manual.
- Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
- NIH Stroke Certification may be required depending on unit assignment.
